This popular genus of about 100 plants comes from all over the world but none are native to the UK! The familiar Buddleja davidii was introduced in the 1890s and soon populated areas of waste- and scrub-land as it outdid native plants in its attractiveness to pollinating insects.
The ‘Butterfly Bush’ is a feeding post for at least 10 different garden species with its often highly scented flowers in pink, purple, red and white. Visitors can include bees, hoverflies and Small Tortoiseshell, Painted Lady and Peacock butterflies

They just keep growing flowers and all. It Take off dead flower heads and you will encourage more flowers. Prune next March, cutting bach new growth to within about 4 ins of old wood. It sounds drastic, but after pruning it will go like a train.

Yes, that as well and I am hoping it grows in front of this shed a neighbour has at the back and the window faces my garden!!
My cat keeps having a run for it and jumps in the window lol.
So it will block the view and block the way for my naughty cat lol

Me too. We like it because we need things that grow fast to fill our garden and give screening.

Poor Buddleja! All you can do really is what you have been - and IF we have a hot summer, give it a drink! At least you have the consolation that it recovers each time. What colour is it?

I've had one on acid soil too so I don't think that's going to be the problem. If it's only been the last couple of years, it might be lack of water and then too much! - lol

My RHS Encyclopaedia says that Buddleja davidii prefers alkaline soil. I am just wondering what Ph your soil is - do you know? Just a thought. It also says 'grow in fertile well-drained soil', so I don't think that your soil will be too rich...

Pruning hard in spring is the right thing to do to it! Even back to a twelve inch stump!!

thanks Saina - I guess I did panic a bit because I had cut it further back than I normally do! I think there are some flower buds forming at the moment!

My mother in law had an 8' Weigela in her small courtyard garden. Too big for the space, so after flowering I 'pruned' it for her! The largest stem was 6" in diameter and this was cut down to ground level. After a week the new shoots appeared on it, and it's shooting away quite happily

Thanks - you are very reassuring! Tell you later if it does flower. Usually, I don't prune things hard enough, this year I pruned this very hard as well as a cotinus which had obviously not been pruned at all for years. It has some new growth which looks O.K. to me. It's showing in one of my photos in the back of the border. I didn't have to worry about flowers on that!

Thanks Clarice. It was new last August and has absolutely grown like a train this year. It's at least 6' tall.
