The long white-like strands just above the leaves are the flowers...it is typical of the piperaceae family.

And yes, it has many stalks and can be a little invasive almost like bamboo...although, not that invasive. This little old house was almost completely surrounded with these plants.

Hard to tell apart from Piper aurenticum,the root beer plant or Santa something.
