Clematis x cartmanii 'Moonbeam'
You may see a variety of clematis called 'Joe' sold as a patio container plant. This is a bigger version of the same clematis, grown over a trellis (there is a shrub underneath as well!)

This seems to fit the bill for me right now - a "Joe" plant in either dark brown/maroon, or cream/white. Many Thanks, Andrew!
