My Robin was given some mealworms today.I saw him later on the compost heap cover, devouring them!

I put the remains of my daughters birthday cake out this morning, birds weren't interested, a chocolate one too, so at dinner had to move on to a higher bird table out of the reach of a certain chocolate lab, few minutes later the squirrel was tucking in, thought he'd be tucked up somewhere warm in this weather.

I'm no cook I'm afraid Janey so he'll have to enjoy the mealworms peanuts etc!
Oh, and suet pellets sometimes but I've run out of those for the moment!

Do you buy the dried ones Paul or are they fresh....my Robin didn't semed too fussed with the dried ones...when I snapped a couple they were just hollow..is that how they are supposed to be?

They do seem to be yes but the Robins and Blackbirds seem to eat them. I sometimes soak them in luke warm water to make them seem like live ones!

They must think that they're full of nourishment, and they're just a shell, maybe the outer skin has goodness in it...?

Maybe its bad for them Avis.....or maybe it wasn't Cadburys...Lol!
Thanks Maple.......lets hope things are easier for them now with the big thaw....

Yes, the thaw will make things easier for the birds Janey but I must say I've(selfishly) been enjoying the frozen snow conditions because it's meant a lot more birds coming to my garden to feed. Long tailed tits which I'd never seen before 22nd December and today I was absolutely delight ed to se a flock of Fieldfares in my garden. Fantastic. I'll probably never see it again as I know they don't very often leave the fields/hedgrows unless things are really tough. So I was absulutely thrilled.Got a distant photo but then deleted it by mistake!!!!

Me too Paul, ready for the better weather but really have loved every minute of the snow.......ooh, lucky you, I was hoping for Long-tailed tits but no, the only different ones we had were goldfinches, just one day, and so many Blackbirds, which were pleased about. I can imagine it must have been fabulous to have the Fieldfares...at least they are imprinted on your memory if not your camera....I bet you were miffed...Lol!
