Autumn colours in my space..

I`ve been busy indoors for what seems like forever, thank goodness I now have time for my favourite space, its been left to more or less take care of itself lately but is still doing me proud, everything is changing colour and looking gangley but I refuse to get rid until they have completely gone over, I`m not always dressed up to the nines myself so why expect my garden to be any different..

The leaves are colouring up and there`s plenty on the lawn but I do like the colours at this time of the year….

The autumn colours in your garden are wonderful Sue ... they look so gentle :o) I'm glad you're enjoying them.

It felt great to get out there again after weeks of dust and then wet paint, mind you I admit to having to wear a fleece, now that was a shock to the system, lol, I can see by the pics how much still needs deadheading but rain did stop me today, I `ve made a start on clearing the g`houses as well but some of the toms are still bearing fruit so thats ongoing, after all this years rain both my greenhouses have green algae to be scrubbed off, now thats a job I`m certainly not looking forward to...

I've got 3 cold frames with a similar problem to your greenhouses Sue. My cacti have been in them all summer, and now I've put alpines and cuttings in them ... but the glass is in need of a realy good clean-up. I'll be doing it in the spring I think lol ...
Good luck with your cleaning :o)

Love your pampass grass Lincslass, how do you keep it in such a good shape. My daughter has a really overgrown one and because i help with her garden(full time worker) i cannot tame this wild thing called Pampass, any tips on how to keep it under control, and tools for pruning it. Tried shears, secateurs and even bought some garden scissors. Also lots of dead stuff in the middle, advice would be appreciated:(

Hello Gralew, I have a love/hate relationship with my Pampas, its loved at the moment but hate when its pruning time.
I sort mine out every June when the birds have finished stripping the fronds, they love it for nesting material, the canes by that time will come out with a good tug, its a thug and you have to show it who is the boss, you need long sleeves, strong gloves, strength and determination, lol, if you have nothing growing near it the easiest way is to set fire to it,( a hosepipe on standby is a very good idea as it will go up like tinder) a method I cannot use now because of where its growing.
I then cut mine down with shears and have even used the hedge trimmer and strimmer in the past to clear space to gain access to the centre as it does get clogged up with dead bits, when clearing away the debris you will notice the new growth and be able to tell which is the strongest side or even which bit you prefer to keep, then I`m afraid its brute force a good fork and spade (even better with two) and cut down into it, I find its easiest to dig down uncovering around it creating a trench, that way you can get at and cut downwards at the roots as well, I reduced mine last June by two thirds, I use my tree pruning shears for that part and even use an old saw to cut into the main old trunk therefore leaving the new growth which is always near the outer edges, you can be as tough as you like, they are darn near impossible to kill off, when you have cut away all thats neccessary and are satisfied with what is left, just backfill around the remainder, remembering to tread down firmly and give her a drink, she`ll give a sigh of relief at being given free reign and freedom to burst forth again, by this time you will be dirty and also need a drink, lol, its a hard job but well worth it.
BTW, many forks and spades have also been reduced in size by this operation...

Oh Dear, ... sound as though we've got a nightmare of a job on our hands!! don't know whether we'll be able to cope, i knew it wouldn't be an easy job. Think what i'll do is cut as much away from the outside as we can, in stages! and then take it from there. We have got quite near to the centre at one time, but there was so much dead stuff there i'm afraid it got left!! Have noticed that new growth and fronds are appearing, so will leave those and try get round the back and other side of it, and just reduce the growth.Probably won't be able to do much more this year, with the weather changing, but thank you so much, for all the information. Wish us luck!!!! Might even have to call a "younger bloke/ woman" for the job, unless you've got some time to spare!!!
Thanks again, will keep this for ref.

waow lincslass fantastic flowers still, is that red hot cats tail i see, i seen this at a botanic gardens and thought impossible to grow in our weather,i love it x your snapdragons are lovely too, very straight ha ha mine are all lopsided like they are runners in the soil and cascading down the high tub i have them in, anything i can do to straighten them?? they have only started flowering new from seed this year my wee girl calls them "talking flowers" , the wee blue flowers second picture down they grow wild i seen them when we were camping in glencoe, the flowers sound like bells if u shake them, i would love to grow them am i right in thinking there campanulas or am i way off the mark x

Hello Andrea and thankyou, the cats tails are called Love Lies Bleeding on the seed packet, you get hundreds and like a fool I set the whole packet in one go, lol, never had them before, I gave loads away and ended up planting lots of them in clumps as well, my snapdragons I actually remembered to pinch the tops out as I was pricking the tiny plants out in the spring, which makes them bushier, I do have some that went a bit straggly but as I deadhead regularly it gives me a longer flowering period and helps stop the bolting effect, you are right the blue is campanula....

You still have a great many flowers in your garden, Lincslass! I have lots still down on the allotment. On my balcony I've removed all the summer flowers, mostly Petunias which gave a sterling performance considering the cold wet dismal "summer" we had! I had to take them out a full month earlier than I'd been planning on as they got mildew & all the leaves dried & dried up in a matter of 3-4 weeks during September.

I have lots of Snapdragons, Cosmos, Verbena bonariensis (1st time I've grown them this year!) & China Pinks. All still bravely flowering away despite a couple of very light frosts on the allotments field. I shall have to make a blog showing them!

20 Oct, 2012

My petunia`s drowned Balcony, I only had two in pots that survived all the wet during our "drought" period, the flowers I`ve got now have more than made up for that and have been flowering for weeks, I just keep up with the deadheading, the blooms are getting smaller admittedly but they are doing me proud.
I`ll look out for your flower blog and may I ask, how come no pics of this years balcony, or is it me being miles behind on pics pages, as is usual,lol..
My awkward Amaryllis has sprouted again but whether she will give me a flower this year remains to be seen, lol.

It's all looking lovely Lincs, so much colour. I know autumn colours are pretty, but roll on spring is all I'm thinking at the moment, I don't like the dying of the year like I used to. Probably not having any summer doesn't help:-)
