I was just about to ask if it was thorned.... I dug a whole hedge of these plants out for a friend...she gave me the plants in payment...boy did she get the better end of that deal!! when the spines enter your skin they break off...and come up in a little blister... I took the plants home and planted them under my kitchen window...away from traffic.

The B. thunbergii cultivars like this one have little thorns, steer clear of B julianae and stenophylla Jacque!

Some Berberis have relatively harmless thorns and others, with thorns two inches long are true demons! I've got both!

Berberis should make a comeback. Its not been mentioned very much over the last few years although it is a painful experience pruning it even when wearing gloves!!!

Hi! You need to take semi-hardwood cuttings for best chance of success. From this seasons growth around mid July - early Autumn, select a lateral shoot and prune off. Do this in the early morning if you can as the plant is full of water then. Pot up right away is best but if you can't then make sure you keep the cutting moist and cool.
The cutting needs to be around 4-6" long. Remove the leaves from the lower third to half of the cutting then plant up to this depth in your compost. Water in well then leave to settle in until the Spring then pot up or plant out as you need.
Good luck
