Very nice colour. The one I've got is much darker, different variety I guess.

Berberis should make a comeback. Its not been mentioned very much over the last few years although it is a painful experience pruning it even when wearing gloves!!!

Some Berberis have relatively harmless thorns and others, with thorns two inches long are true demons! I've got both!

The B. thunbergii cultivars like this one have little thorns, steer clear of B julianae and stenophylla Jacque!

I was just about to ask if it was thorned.... I dug a whole hedge of these plants out for a friend...she gave me the plants in payment...boy did she get the better end of that deal!! when the spines enter your skin they break off...and come up in a little blister... I took the plants home and planted them under my kitchen window...away from traffic.

All your berries are great harvest colors. Do most stay on the plants through winter until the birds clean them up?

Members' notes...
Very prickly but worth it for the lovely autumn colours.
A neat compact bright small shrub with red, pink & cream variegation in the leaves. At the brightest in the earl summer followed by a vivid red Autumn colour. An easy to-grow shrub.
From berberys, the Arabic name for fruit. A small shrub from Japan, introduced in 1864.
Suitable for small gardens or planted en masse for a dramatic effect.
Flowers March to April with star like yellow flowers.
Height & spread in 5 years: 150cm x 100cm. Prune to shape as required.
4-28-04 a friend gave me 3 little sticks (cuttings) from her medium-sized Golden Barberry and I brought them home and hoped for the best. I dipped the ends in root hormone and potted them. Only one grew roots. Today it is about 2'x2' and blooms in the spring. It's a beautiful yellow.

Gosh that's a good one isn't it. Very much underrated is Berberis me thinks.
