Brilliant! I can obtain those old wine barrels locally for next to nothing and never thought about using one for a small water feature. I have always used them for large container plantings. I just love the rustic look of the one that you have! Most of the ones that I can get are newer an do not have the great "rust trails" in the wood that yours' has. What a great idea!

I'm glad you liked it N20 .. you are lucky to be able to get the barrels locally , I had to buy this one last year as the original barrel disintegrated , luckily the pump still fit it perfectly .. I think I had another photo with more plants on it taken more recently this year , come to think of it that might be the old barrel on this photo and the recent photo the new one .. :o)

Lovely feature. I have been thinking of doing something like this, & I can get the half barrels from a GC in the city. Did you have to seal the inside of the barrel to make it waterproof Amy? I've only ever had a half barrel once in my life & that was when I lived in England & purchased a lovely old one from a newspaper advertisement. For some reason, I never planted it up & it sat outdoors for months empty. By the time I did get round to doing that, I found that it had totally dried out & had actually fallen apart! All that was left were the two rusty iron bands & a pile of wood! Someone told me that if you leave them empty, you have to 'water' them to keep the wood swollen & the bands tight. I daresay, in hindsight, that I could have put mine together again, but I didn't think of doing that at the time.

Thank you Dwyllis I'm glad you like this idea , the person was quite right in telling you that you must keep the barrel full of water, it does make the wood swell to keep it water tight , we have to keep this one topped up if not it will start to open up round the top , you don't have to line or seal the barrel to start with they are made to be waterproof .. I wish you good luck if you buy a barrel ,shame about the last one :o))
