So many flowers on your aquilegia.....there must be more than one plant there?

26 May, 2010

Still fabulous.

Yes, Sarah - several, and I haven't the heart to pull them out. Softie!

Thanks, Toto. :-)

They look brilliant en masse, no need to pull them out. One of my very favourite plants. I have lots of different ones around the garden.

I agree with Lovemyveg! But it you do think there are too many in there, then you can move them, but do it in early spring just as growth is starting and then they move well I've found. Moving at other times I've found is a disaster.

border looks stunning barbara ;o)

Thanks, all.

I have tried moving them, Sarah, and as you say - disaster! The roots seem to be very long and they haven't transplanted well in the past.

Lovely boarder

Was wondering what is the closest spacing you can put plants in? I'm want to fill my beds with plants and achieve this effect.

Yeah, I have had disasters trying to move Aquilegias, but early spring seems to work - although I've only done it with plants in their third or second year, no older. The breeder I mentioned before sends them out bareroot in early spring.

Tanethra - I think it involves a shoehorn!!! Love the avatar by the way....reminds me of a certain episode of Red Dwarf from way back..... ;-)

Lol thats where I got the idea from for my avatar!

Hallo Tanethra - welcome to GOY. Thanks for your kind comment. I do plant closely, and my rule of thumb is - if I see some soil, plant something in it! LOL.

Actually, the plants do hold each other up - so there isn't normally the need for lots of plant supports. The delphiniums do have a stake, and if a large clump of aquilegias topples in the wind, it gets one, as well. I try to read up on plant heights to get the tallest to the back. This doesn't always work when the aquilegias seed themselves, though!

Ah thanks for the welcome and tip Spritzhenry :-)

Got some boarder plants from my mother in law to plant in this weekend. Given us some Delphiniums, Geraniums and some Pansies. She did say to plant the Delphiniums towards the back of the boarder as they grow to about 3'-4' ft. Prob put the Geraniums and Pansies in a hanging basket.

Make sure you stake the delphiniums straight away, Tanethra - tie them loosely to canes with soft twine. Have fun! :-)))

29 May, 2010
