Bird Counting

Are you going to be counting birds next weekend? The RSPB want everyone to do this whether in a garden or a park. I had a go last year and did my best to follow the rules and not to count birds flying around, only those on the ground. Not that easy!

Anyway as you can see our bird table is popular with the blue tits. The larger birds and the nuthatches like the top section and we have a newcomer, a wagtail, since the snow. Haven’t seen him around before.

One thrush who has grown up in our garden loves the fat balls but is too heavy to be able to hang like the bluetits. He attacks the fat balls until bits fall on the ground.

The only time we've ever had visits from pied wagtails is in the snow...but not seen any yet this year.mind you, we've only got a dusting of snow at the moment. But the frozen fields have meant we've seen blue tits and long tailed tits in last couple of days!

I wish the birdwatch had been this weekend we have had so many lovely birds that I know will hide next week!

The wagtails must go south to you then Paul, we get them only in the summer

I hope to do the bird count too ... today there were the usual Starlings, Pigeons, Blackbirds, Robins and Bluetits but, lovely to see a Mistle Thrush and a Wagtail coming in for the breadcrumbs. Funniest sight was our cat getting ready to pounce ... but she was inside looking through the glass doors ... so near yet so far away!

It seems we all have the same problem Pam, I have lots of birds visiting every day but fully expect them to be away next weekend, lol....

Im doing for the first time this year - I'm anticipating it not being the easiest of tasks, depends on how many cats come into the garden whilst I'm doing it :)
I won't be doing it between 2 and 3 pm I notice every day that they disappear at that time. I wonder if a neighbour puts their food out at that time!

Yes, Pam, the wagtails are around here most of the winter!

I will try and count the birds in my garden next weekend, but when I've tried in past years, all the birds seem to go into hiding! lol.

my daughter will take photos every 5 mins or if there are a lot of birds at any one time. we can then do a proper id [she would nt be able to tell a coal tit from a black cap for instance] it will alsomake the count of starlings etc easier for her and me actually.

Typical! The nuthatches kept away, appearing ten minutes after the hourwas up! The wagtail had "disappeared".

We keep confusing female blackbird and thrush!

I did my count yesterday and although my robin was absent, I had the best count ever, I put that down to being snowbound, today the snow has all but gone because of very heavy downpour ( breathes sigh of relief) and the birds are loving being able to find food in the lawn and borders....

Ours was very poor! But, as the RSPB say, some have better than normal and some worse so they average out!the garden was deathly quiet both days although we did get 3 little Robins and a chaffinch who never usually comes in my garden. But the Sparrows, Dunnocks, starlings, Blackbirds were conspicuous by their absence!! even the Magpies stayed away!
