Eucalyptus

I am sitting in my garden room listening to the wind howling round this monster of a tree. It is over 70’ tall with three trunks that I can’t put my arms round. Once again the men are coming in the morning to cut it down, once again the weather is against it. When we moved in we had the tree topped, this was 5 years ago the top is back to its original height. The reason it has three trunks is it was hit by lightning 18 years ago but grew again. I love trees but this one is a monster that moves in the wind and I fear for my greenhouse. If any one is considering planting one please think long and hard where you put it and do keep it trimmed. If luck is on my side the wind will abate and the men will arrive in the morning and then the only damage will be to my purse.

Thanks Peter it is down ! Bit hairy at times but we had the right guys on the job. I intend to keep a few logs around the garden as a keepsake, plus they give a bit of height in certain places. Hope you enjoyed a day in the garden I dont think we will get many more this year.

Good tree surgeons are worth their weight in gold, aren't they! We found ours by recommendation, and he trained at Westonbirt so he loves trees and keeps ours looking good as well as being safe. A different firm 'did' the poplars next door and they just hacked branches off with their chainsaws with no regard for the shape of the trees. They just look ugly and sad. :-(

I agree its not a job that we could do ourselves. Its sad to see such a big tree go but I have put a horse chestnut in at the bottom of the garden so we should see that grow over the next few years. I now have a nice artea in which to plant a few shrubs that will see daylight!

You are being Eco-friendly then, replacing your poor Eucalpytus with a Horse Chestnut! - awful to have to fell trees, isn't it. Glad you can have fun replanting the space, though! Let us know what you decide to put in, won't you!

Hi Dibber, hope they managed to cut it down. It was really windy here last night but it's peaceful and clear blue skies this morning - In fact it's about time for me to get out and enjoy it :o)
