I planted Beetroot seedlings in their Peat Pots in the ground. Forgot the soot, must check for slugs this a.m. first job.

Spent ages carefully tying my Runner Beans onto the canes with old thick wool to help them – they are very weak this year, due to lack of sunshine – another depression and possibly strong winds on the way. The slugs have left them alone after I sprinkled old soot at the base of each plant.

Saw our plantsman had some Celery plants on his stall.
Took one home for 50p – another attempt to grow White Celery in the greenhouse. Ha ha. Put some ‘Clover’ compost in the bottom of an 11" pot, about 2" deep. Planted the Celery plant in this. Tied a newspaper carefully round it. Then filled up the rest of the pot. Stood pot in an old plastic washing up bowl in 2" of water. Said " Now grow" to it.
It was like putting the children to bed again !

Thats an interesting blog. I too found lack of light has affected young growth this year.

I hope your Celery grows. I haven't tried them like that before. It's worth a try.
Strangely enough the slugs have left my beans alone this year. I wonder why ? I haven't put any slug pellets down. Maybe there's a frog about ...

That's interesting! Somwehere I read that old coffee grounds are good - they do get very dry and crumbly. I have no soot, but plenty of coffee! I hope your celery behaves for you!
