I was introduced to Tree Paeonia around the end of the 1970’s by my very dear friend Bob,he is about to leave his Paeonia’s and many other specimen shrubs behind as he downsizes at the age of 94.most of the Paeonia seed I have distributed over the last four years on Goy has in one way or another originated in Bobs garden.
Thought it fitting to pay a last visit to the garden and take a few photos.of the white one Paeonia Suffruticosa later named ‘The Rock’
Farrer’s description on finding it in the wild quote ‘There balancing rarely amid the brushwood, shone out at me the huge expanded goblets of Paeonia moutan, refulgent as pure snow and fragrant as a heavenly rose.It grew tall and thin and stately each plant with two or three thin upstanding wands tipped by the swaying burden of a single upright bloom with a heart of gold, each stainless petal flamed at the base with a clean and definite feathered blotch of maroon’

Then there is a pink one the size of a good size dinner plate

Another variation had taken the full force of last nights winds the petals being for the most on the ground.

Tucked away in a corner a smaller red one was flowering its heart out.

For me it’s the end of a era for him well at the moment he shows no emotion ,but how do you walk away from blooms like that.
enjoy

beautiful photos.
I had a similar situation with a man across the road, his rose bushes now bloom in my front yard
I had to promise him I would take good care of them :)

Beautiful blooms Brian and all good wishes to your dear friend Bob ,his blooms I'm sure have brought a lot of joy to many people , we have a friend and neighbour near us who has put his house up for sale because he can't manage the garden any longer , it has been sad to see what was once a beautiful garden becoming overgrown and to see how sad it was making him ,I shall miss his advice plants /seeds and cuttings he has always put me right and told me off if I was doing something wrong ,I've learnt so much from him !

A real sense of sadness here. Nothing remains the same does it?
The pink of the paeony is just like candy floss, hard to picture the size of it - what a specimen!
Hope all will go well for him.

yes, I agree with Wildrose...hope he enjoys his new home. the Tree Paeonies are stunning...especially the top one in white. I discovered only this week that it was Farrer who invited the first of the planthunting Cox (of Glendoick, Perthshire) family to accompany him on a foreign trip and thus began the Rhododendron collection at Glendoick. I just put up a blog of it for you this week Brian....if you have time, have a look.

thoroughly enjoyed your valuable photographic contribution Bjs, it plays a part in continuing the story so it isn't a complete full stop is it?

Stunning flowers, I hope Bob is happy wherever he's moving to, and that whoever takes over his garden appreciates the beauty they're getting and takes care of it.
