πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ A village filled with VE Day scarecrows, flags and bunting!

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Today has been a special time in our village.
Despite the lock down, nearly 40 scarecrows sprang up overnight! People hung out bunting and draped flags from windows and brought our recent very quiet village to life.

Most had a theme linked with World War Two and were a joy to see.

I cannot show them all to you but will add on a few here.

These first two pictures are of scarecrows made by our neighbour who thought of the whole idea! I watched him trying to put the parachutist up in his tree last night and it was so funny to watch!

Meet a land girl, a very chic member of the resistance and someone out to get their rations!

Next up in the clouds to meet two Spitfire planes and their pilots!

There was a miner, a nurse and an actress – Audrey Hepburn no less in her convertible plus hamper and suitcase in the back!

We even had an honorary visit from Sir Winston himself – it was good of him to spare the time!

Our scarecrow was based on the one in Mr McGregor’s garden so that is why Peter Rabbit is hovering below!

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ A memorable day, I hope we can do something similar in a year’s time. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

Its incredible that everyone has gone to all of this effort, with things being locked down! Shows real spirit! Congratulations to everyone involved! I haven’t even got a flag to put up!

Very nice. Good to see unusual VE Celebrations.

Our village does scarecrows later in the year & some are in shop windows etc

A lovely sunny day & a good one for you all to treasure. Well done.

Absolutely amazing! Perhaps the lockdown will wean people from the ever present TV into doing more things creative. Well done to all.

Brilliant Chris ! I loved all the scarecrows ! I hope you had the sunshine too ! I had a cd of the V.E.Day remberance songs and Rick and I sat outside most of the day playing it, but unfortunately, nothing going on in our street !

Such a heart-warming blog in these difficult times ... thanks for sharing your photos Chris ... :o)

Is this done every year Chris or a special effort in the lock down? Whatever it's fantastic:-)

What a wonderful effort by the villagers. I'm sure they all had fun making their scarecrows. No wonder Hitler was beaten. I hope you had a great day to remember.

Thank you all for such very warm wishes, so lovely to read.

I must have spoken ( at a safe distance! ) to more people from our village yesterday than I had in years and it certainly endorsed the words of the Queen last night about there being 'love and caring' behind closed doors!

I had a bit of a health scare earlier this month and nearly everyone asked me how I was which was so kind of them. News gets round in a village you know!
All in all it was a perfect day.

Ba - it was a one off but because it was such a success it might just happen again.

Love and thanks to you all.

It's nice to see everybody out having a good time. Wildrose, can you please explain to this Yankee Boy what bunting is? I've heard that word several times already but I can't reference it to anything. What is bunting?

10 May, 2020

Bunting is a row of smallish flags attached to a length of tape which can then be hung up to decorate buildings or strung along a fence perhaps. The VE Day bunting was mainly red, white and blue or decorated with Union Jacks. People also put pretty, floral bunting inside their homes also. There are a few examples of bunting on some of the scarecrow pictures.
Are you going to make some now?!!

Oh so that's bunting? I've learned something today. Make some? I'll probably just go to Walmart for some bunting for the July 4th festivities If I can.

What a wonderful Community you have in your small village,Chris, and typical of most of them,I think,so well done. The effort put into all those was amazing, and I loved them all..Loved your Teddies ,Scarecrow and Peter Rabbit :o) I hope John approved of a jacket and hat being worn by the Scarecrow, which I assume belong to him ? Lol ..Pretty quiet here on our little cul de sac,but we could hear lots of celebrations taking place, which was enjoyable too..x

What a brilliant fantastic idea and a brilliant selection of photos. I would love to have seen the village for real. I am being nosey now : Would your village have celebrated VE Day like this if not for the lockdown ? I should imagine they would not like us in London, I put flags and bunting in the garden, had afternoon tea for two, played some music and that was it :) Ooooo was lucky enough to see the fantastic Red Arrows pass directly over my garden :) :) fantastic. xx

Sandra, It IS a very friendly village and people are very caring. Most of the bunting is down now and we are back to normal.

Loupylou, I love the Red Arrows and to see and hear the fly past must have been wonderful. This celebration was only planned during the lockdown - someone had the idea, suggested it and it happened!!

What a fantastic idea and wonderful effort by everyone! It seems a lot of the old time War Effort has sprung up in lots of places over the past weeks/months. There was a little bit of flag waving and bunting around my little estate, but nothing to compare to yours. Well done to everyone involved.

What a lovely way of celebrating I love them all glad you had a good day and turn out.

Loved this blog. What a great effort by everyone. We didn't think to do anything in our little cul de sac. Making me feel a bit ashamed. I'm glad you live in such a friendly village, well done.

What a good effort to commemorate such an important event .

It certainly did put a smile on the face of everyone and gave a huge amount of pleasure.
My only worry is that my friend who made the teddies' clothes put Big Ted in a little skirt and I have always thought of 'him' as a 'he!' He hasn't complained yet!

What a brilliant show, so much imagination and time to source all the bits and Bob's, congratulations to your village. We were rather sedate, some parts highly decorated, others not so much. Lots of us had afternoon tea (with little finger raised!) In front gardens. I made scones, passed most on to my local daughter and family so we ate together but several roads apart. πŸ™‚

How lovely, the scarecrows were a very good idea and you can see the people really put their hearts into making everywhere look special, something like that can really bring people together, shame it had to be socially distant especially on such a memorable day, lets hope you do it all again when you can join together and celebrate in the way a scarecrow festival is meant to be....I enjoyed seeing all the photo's, thankyou for sharing..
