40 YEARS & HOLDING

It was quite a day for hubby and I forty years ago ~~~Friday, JULY 1st, 1971. We were married in the little church on Bowen Island where I spent a good part of my childhood. We had a very small wedding as all hubby’s family were in the UK.

It was a lovely sunny day and we had the ‘afters’ in the garden of our home with a salmon bbq prepared by my stepmom (fresh salmon right from the ocean). I made my wedding cake, my best friend from high school days was my matron of honour, and my boss, an ordained minister, conducted the marriage.

There were some amusing moments….
~ we forgot to get flowers for my matron of honour so my stepmom cut some astillbe from her garden, made a bouquet and tied it with a ribbon….problem solved :)
~ I had never made a wedding cake before and didn’t know the purpose of the almond paste (to prevent the discolouring of the fruit coming through to the icing). So on the morning of our wedding we were frantically trying to ‘patch up’ the cake to disguise my mistake :)
~~we even forgot to arrange any music (there was only a pump organ in the church; no piano) but never fear, the cousins saved the day with their special kind of accompaniment (lol)
~
~some of my cousins heard we were getting married and they arrived at the church with their 4 very young children (complete with sand pails and shovels on their way to the local beach) and being young they clanged their way through the service :)
~ my brother-in-law (sister’s hubby) had a terrible cough and on the very poor quality recording of the ceremony his coughs can be heard echoing around the tiny little church :)
~~my dad was choked when asked ‘who gives this woman to be married?’ (but he got through the ceremony despite his emotions) :)
~
~ after the ceremony we went to get into our car (hubby driving) and realized as we set off down the road that a pile of tin cans had been tied to the back of our car so we clattered along the road all the way back to my dad’s home (2 miles) :)

Hmmm….I hope I haven’t bored you with all my memories because I’ve got some piccies from our big day to share too…

It’s taken me ages to prepare this with the photos….if only I weren’t so technically challenged! I’ve had a great time reliving our wedding day all those years ago. Thank you for reading and viewing our photos :) x

Congratulations to you both on your anniversary. Some youngsters today should read your blog to see that you don't have to spend thousands to have a happy wedding day and even 'errors and omissions' can be turned into happy memories. Really enjoyed this blog :)

Many congratulations, Jacquie, on your Ruby Wedding anniversary.

It's amazing how quickly those years seem to fly past isn't it ?

I had my 40th last year and it just doesn't seem possible that you can still be with someone who you met all those years ago, does it ?

Again, my very best wishes to you both. Have a happy day.

Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to Southport we go :) Neither of us have had a decent night's sleep last night so not going to venture too far afield. Southport is always a welcoming place and only about 45 mins. away. I guess sleepless nights are indicative of the price of 40 yrs. of marriage...lol

Thank you for your good wishes. We will enjoy our day together.

congratulations on your Ruby wedding aniversary Winstonlass!
I really enjoyed looking at this, your dad looks pleased as punch bless him.
You reminded me it's my brothers 10th wedding aniversary on the 7th july, i'm gonna get tesco to deliver them a tin of biscuits, get it 'tin' lol.
People spend far to much on weddings these days, a small intimate affair like yours is so much more personal, it's the way i'm gonna do things (when i find some one to have me hahaha)
Once again Congrats and thanks for sharing, hope you have a lovely time away.

Thanks again...it's such a treat to read all your comments :)

My circle of friends on GoY just keeps growing and growing! Just as the gardening results I keep reading about on all your great blogs. We have a cooler day today which I am welcoming with open arms...it was so hot here yesterday and we were out shifting topsoil and cutting grass most of the afternoon in all the heat.

Happy gardening friends.

Lincs....and so congratulations on your 44th wedding anniversary are in order :) 1st July was quite a day for us both.

Thanks Hywel and Crissue...I'm glad you enjoyed sharing our wedding day memories. I know just how you feel at viewing blogs/photos and being 'the cow's tail' as Hywel says! lol Not heard that expression before but I think we all understand the frustration of falling so far behind in GoY blogs etc. Can't be helped and we get there eventually. :)

7 Jul, 2011

7 Jul, 2011

I'm the cow's tail Hywel (accused of that when I was a timid, tiny cadet nurse by a very fearsome sister) Congrats on your 40th Whistonlass and your laid back wedding piccies......clever to get them on GoY too. Hope you enjoy many more years of wedded bliss....as they say. Easy to remember what year you had your garden so beautifully made over.

7 Jul, 2011

congratulations on your anniversary , thanks for sharing your memories

7 Jul, 2011

Sixpence...it is a pretty good innings these days as you say, 40 years. Thank you.

Dorjac...I hadn't thought about it being our 40th and also the year we got our garden at last (never put the two happy happenings together...lol). A good point you have made :)

Pondlady, glad you enjoyed our wedding day memories :)

7 Jul, 2011

:o)) Your welcome Whistonlass it is a very good innings :o))

10 Jul, 2011

I'm even further behind the Coos tail Whistonlass. Lovely memories of a very happy day. It is wonderful to have shared the joys and sorrows of the last 40 years together and come out smiling and happy.

20 Jul, 2011

Yes, Scotsgran....where do the years go? Certainly happy years, through all the ups and downs of raising a family, running our business...and now the reward of a happy retirement :)

21 Jul, 2011

As the cow's tail has been taken, I will be the horse's tail! Jacquie, I cant believe I missed this (thank goodness for your Summerhouse blog!), but obviously a lovely, happy day. Your smile hasnt changed one bit!!
A great day to choose too, Canada Day, something to hold on to and bring back memories of home. The happiness shines thru in these lovely pictures and OH and I wish you many, many more years of it.
Its a Pearl for OH and I in October..the best 30 years of my life and I can see that you know what I mean!
Belated best wishes my dear..lots of hugs xxxx

22 Jul, 2011

Lovely words from you, M....those years have flown by for us. And you can celebrate 30 years of marriage in October which is a great milestone too. Yes, Canada Day is always a special day for us and evokes great memories.

Glad you came across the blog about our summer house. I am very excited to have that in situ and I can have an ongoing project to dream into reality :)
