Slow progress, but getting there

It’s been a while since I updated this blog, but then again, progress has been slow.

We found yet more iron, plastic tiles and asbestos when we started to dig it over and visually, it doesn’t look as though we’re much further forward. The bit of the garden where the big old L-shaped shed/stable thingy used to be is all compacted plus there’s a lot of buried rubbish there – basically, where there are no weeds, nettles and grass springing up, chances are, there’s something nasty in the ground.

Bringing down the fence which used to be the border between our old garden and the new garden has been wonderful – seeing all this empty space when we’re eating dinner in the kitchen and watching all the wildlife eating my vegetables has been just great…

So far we’ve had rabbits and muntjac deer.

Last week I rescued a baby rabbit from next door’s cat. The rabbit was hiding under a bit of old plywood which was lying on a large rock and the cat was dancing on the plywood trying to torture the rabbit out of its hiding place. I ran out in my pyjamas (it was first thing in the morning), chased the cat away and released the rabbit, which was about the size of a tennis ball, out of its shelter and over the hedge to safety to join the rest of its family. The rabbits repaid me by digging over a corner of my vegetable plot and next door’s cat now hisses at me every time we see each other…

Still, bringing nature closer to the house can only be a good thing in the long run.

RIP the runner beans after last week’s frost. Not too sure about the potatoes either, but I earthed them up a bit more (again) and am keeping my fingers crossed (again).
