The Finished Arch, clematis and rose

Here it is, in all it’s glory.

A couple of weeks ago I decided to get rid of the large New Zealand flax on the left hand side of my garden.

By removing this it gave me room to open up the garden and make an access path down an ajoining path and to the tree ferns.

Once the bricks were down and the arch in place it was then a case of what to plant.

Well I am planting a Clematis ‘niobe’ (4-5inch red flowers from May – Sept) on one side and a climbing rose ‘Swan Lake’ (Large white recurrent flowers all summer) on the other.
I’m not for one minute saying this is all I am going to have but It’s a start.

Looking forward to see how your arch looks. I have a couple in my garden, One with Honeysucke and Jasmine. The other with Clematis and Jasmine. One Jasmine didn't survive the winter so will replace it with Climbing Rose Albertine.

I love the NZ flax but they do grow so very large, like the arch, and Niobe is a good choice, look forward to seeing how it all comes together.

Very smart, was it messy to erect or quite easy? I am thinking of an arch in ours but to buy a ready made or make one myself that is the question, cost wise probably just as dear eitherway.

Straight forward to build. It came in two complete panels, the roof part you assemble and then screw it onto the two panels. It is all pre drilled.

It was purchased from Tesco direct.

I managed on my own, a bit of a struggle. But it would be a breeze with two people.

I then positioned it, again with two it would be easier. Dug four holes and positioned it and added some post-crete. I was going to use metaposts but I couldnt find any the right size, so after two DIY places a timber merchant and a garden centre I went for post-crete.

I dont intend moving it.

I almost closed my eyes when I began reading about you removing your phormium (Il love them), but the improvement is fab! I also happen to really like the plants you have chosen for the arch. Wonder what else you'll choose to grow up here? :-)

David to large portions of the Flax has gone into my friends garden and I have 3 pots full still here. Not to mention the other two Flax in the garden that was originally all the same plant.

Some sweet peas have since been added, as they will grow a lot quicker than the rose and the clematis, this year.

Hello Treesandthings, How are Swan Lake and Niobe getting on? I'm just about to dig up a large plant to free some space so I'm suitably inspired. I've also got Niobe to find a home for so finding this blog was well timed!

Hi Keithsmum, Niobe has got two flower buds, as soon as it flowers I shall post a pic. Swan lake has had three flowers so far and look great, there are some pics of that one on my photos already.
