I'm clueless Swanky but ask Ian-Digs_v2 or Macrimmon for advice, they'll be a big help!

As you say Swanky, its a bit late for this year but next year the world is, literally, your limit. Your choice of veg is only limited by your desire and imagination. If I were starting from 'day one' I would go to my local library and browse through the books with a pen and paper handy and choose those that were relatively easy to grow (as well as being liked by your family of course). After all you are growing these to eat not to look at. Don't forget that as well as the almost endless choice you have there is also loads of different ways of growing them.
Good luck and don't forget their are lots of GoYers who will be only to happy to answer your questions :~))

Peas and broad beans freeze very nicely but I don't find kidney beans do - I think they tend to go a bit sloppy when defrosted.
