Birdies everywhere

On Wednesday I spent the entire day in the garden weeding, mowing the lawn, straightening things up. So by the time the kids got back from school I was beautifully tired – just in the mood for lieing on the grass and staring up at the sky.

So that is exactly what I did, with one child tucked under each arm – just nattering about the day we had had and gazing up into the wide blue.

That is when we spotted them – three buzzards wheeling so high up that they were almost like dots. They came close enough for us to be sure of the identification and then boof – a heron flew across below the line of the trees. Such a funny combination.

This afternoon I was having a quick break in the hammock (Don’t get the wrong idea – I do not spend my life horizontal – I had just come back from a bicycle ride!)
when a tiny weeny little bird came flitting back and forth in the trees – taking insects on the wing. I think it was a Goldcrest – not that easy to tell from below.

I am loving living on the edge of the countryside.

Seems like you have the right idea Sarah of actually enjoying your garden as well as working in it.

Welcome to my world! Yesterday we watched two Short-Toed Eagles reconfirming their commitment to each other with a fantastic aerial display; several Griffon Vultures off on a jaunt to the plains; a Stork who must have fancied a little mountain air; a pair of Jays seeing off a nosy Crow; and the return of the House Martins checking out their nesting site under the eaves of our casa. Nice to see them all back. Now I hope to see the return of the Red-Backed Shrike - I like the way he sits 'tidily' and upright and totally ignores the mayhem he causes amongst the other bird families. It is amazing what can be seen if you look 'up' occasionally instead of always looking 'down' at the plants. :o)

Sarah...I love to hear of mom's spending time with their kids doing just the kind of things you describe...you just can't beat these moments of bliss :)

You worked a long time in your garden and a bike ride thrown in...I think you deserved a few minutes on that hammock, Sarah.

That must have been a sight...3 buzzards flying overhead!
