what season is it?

I thought we had 4 distinct seasons in England but it looks as though there is currently some confusion?
Is this the spring? ~ with buds already on the azalea:

and flowers on the blackberry:

or late summer with the fuchsia in full bloom:

the gentian peeping through the leaves [is that a tiny slug inside it?]

the mombretia emily mckenzie in its blazing glory

or harvest with the golden raspberries juicy and ripe growing wild:

perhaps the golden autumn has come with its glowing carpet:

or winter with the ivy

and the red berried holly

or perhaps most confusing of all on bonfire night:
a red hot poker? no! a blazing rose lighting up the dark!

i took all these photos today ~ on a cloudy drizzling november 5th!

It does seem the seasons are mixed up...but what a bonus to have things flowering in November. I just wonder how long before the frost and wind come to disturb all the buds and new growth our plants would normally "wear" in spring?

Enjoyed your photos, Sticki....that last one with the single rose is really nice :)

thank you! had to use flash ~ hence the dark background but even at 4.30 it was too dark to take the photo!

It's wonderful how things last well into the autumn. I loved the last pic ! :o)

nice blog and pictures, but winter has definately arrived up here we have been having gales rain and sleet. my garden already looks bedraggled. all my container plants have been move into the greenhouser 4 winter. never mind only 5 months or so till spring and everything comes back to life

thank you islander. its tough to have such a long winter, but there are nice things about it too? i dont have a greenhouse and we are having some building done ~ the conservatory will be taken down ~ not sure where the plants will go now!!

I can't believe you still have raspberries!

Beautiful pics Sticki, I especially like the fiery looking Montbretia and the rose at the end is stunning in it's simplicity against the black background. :o))

thank you ~ not my raspberries ~ they are growing wild at the back of the allotments! the black is sort of accidental ~ it was so dark i had to use the flash!

Amazing! You've got some lovely plants :o)))))

It is strange how plants get mixed up - but it's the gradual change into the next season, I suppose. When you get a mild period, plants decide to produce a bud or two! I've still got roses with buds, as well, and I really hope they open. We might both be looking at open blooms, Sticki - won't that be a pleasure! :-))

6 Nov, 2010

it would be lovely spritz but the generous gardener bud that looked so promising has not opened ~ it seems as though everything shrinks in time ~ they have maybe a few minutes to open and bloom instead of several days??!!
they're not all my plants pip ~ the holly, ivy, 'golden tree' and raspberries are all growing in woods near me.

6 Nov, 2010

Yes - and some horrible critter has munched one of my rose buds! What a cheek! :-(( One of the others has some colour showing, so I'm still hoping, though.

6 Nov, 2010

i hope so too

I`m out every other day still deadheading summer annuals, autumn is very strong with asters, nerines and obviously the leaves changing colour each day, then I look at my evergreen clematis already lots of flowers, viburnam smothered in buds, both winter flowering, and lo and behold the rockery plants have started to flower at both ends of the garden, amazing when one considers how shady the bottom is.....Four seasons in one garden , in our front which is very shady all day long the pentstemons are all in bud again and the fuschias in pots are still doing very well.........

6 Nov, 2010

your photo's are lovely Sticki and they were certainly brighter than last nights fireworks!!

6 Nov, 2010

Some great pics, my favourite has got to be the rose. As you say the seasons seem to be forgeting when they should start and end. Its been a glorious day here today, quite warm sunshine, there are three lovely buds on my Dublin Bay Rose, just hope they open before we have another one of the frosts that we got a couple of weeks ago.

6 Nov, 2010

yes sun here too, although not for long ~ tried to take photos of the trees in their autumn ball gowns but i was too late ~ most of them had shed their leaves

I still have a yellow flowered crocosmia flowering as well as Alstroemeria 'inca tropic'! My clematis has just started to flower:I will have to get a photo of it on my pages. The flowers are speckled inside.
I also had to cut my grass again the other day as it is still growing away like mad.
The seasons are blending into periods I think: cool and damp, mild and damp, and warm and damp with the odd normal day thrown in for good measure!

9 Nov, 2010

sounds about right geraniumdad ~ i have alstromeria and a crocosmia but no clematis. grass or moss is still growing but covered up by leaves!
