Spot The Difference.

In April this year I decided to remove a strip of the lawn on the south facing side to accommodate more Iris.
It’s done, you would hardly notice the difference.
I realigned the stepping slabs and reseeded the bits where OH’s big feet had chewed up the grass.

The pebble path to the evening sun seat had to be lengthened and the bird bath was moved up to the left of the seat. It now serves as a place to put the drinks tray, when we have an aperitif on a summers evening. Not today though, it’s pouring down.
The centre where the bird bath was, actually has the hole for the rotary washing line underneath, so now it it is much easier and lighter to remove the round slab instead of the concrete bath.
The central slab is the only place in the back garden that has sun all day, when it’s shining. Fences, the garage and bungalow shade out the edges of the garden at some part of the day.
At present it has a dwarf water lily in a pot on that slab, but that’s another story.

The artichoke, at the back, turned out to be 5 roots, so one piece has been reestablished in the south corner. The remaining piece pictured will go after flowering. We don’t eat globe artichokes they take too much effort to cook for the small amount of flesh.
2016 seedling Iris are now planted in the new space……
but will I nibble at the lawn again next year?

You did a good job there and yes I guess you will need another little strip for your babies as they grow, I was going to ask what the huge plant was but you have told me its the Artichoke, it makes quite a feature in the border, it draws your eyes in both pics, must have been a bit awkward having to move the birdbath all the time, so much easier it will be to get at the hole for the rotary line now, not that you need it at the moment, its chucking it down here again as well, I honestly don't know how anything is still standing Siris with the wind and the force of the rain. I do like to see full beds and borders and yours certainly are....

A lovely result Siris. We have been given 3 artichoke plants so I hope they will look like yours!

It looks far better especially the grass and stones the bird tables are quite heavy great idea using it for a place to put your drinks. Love that Artichoke your garden is lovely.

Thank you, the Artichoke is certainly a feature, the replacement piece is doing well. Go up the stepping stones on the left, though the Clematis pergola and its in that corner.
I took this second photo 26 April now the back fence is yellow with an Hypericum.

I bet that is a wonderful site to see your back fence covered in yellow from your Hypericum.

Wildrose, I would be surprised if your Artichoke flowers this year, but the plants themselves are eyecatching wth their silvery foliage.

Its amazing how much difference its made, good use of the bird bath you get your share as well as the birds.

Stroller, the birds never used the birdbath, because there was never any water on it. If I put some on, it evaporated in a flash. The water lily tub, however is much appreciated by the birds. One of the wood pigeons has drunk from it today, stupid birds. After several months of trying to get onto the bird table for food, ( I blocked big bird access) they still try daily. Dim Wits!
