Replacement Goldfish.

Yesterday we had torrential rain here, which refilled my pond, that was part full, while I worked on edging it.
This afternoon I went to a Garden Centre with a water garden and aquatic section to buy some more pond fish.
I have 3 large red Comet fish left out of 8, the 5 others were predated.
I bought 5 new ones, Shubunkins. I had the assistant chasing the ones I wanted around the tank full, because I liked the ones with plenty of red and blue colour. Here they are in the plastic bag, while I acclimatised them to the temperature of the pond and the different water.

Then I launched them and they disappeared into the depths, not to seen by me or the Crow, hopefully.

They are attractive Siris...I cleaned all the algae from the little barrel, the watching frog was not at all bothered in fact I thought it was dead....until I gave it a gentle nudge lol

They are pretty. Have you got plans to protect them from the airborne predators?

Very pretty Siris :-)
Our neighbour who has some very big koi had someone knock on his door the other evening to say he'd just seen a cat run over the road with a huge fish in its mouth , now whether it was one of his or one of our goldfish I don't know tabby cat lays for hours watching them never thought he'd actually catch one!!!

I like Shubunkins, think we only have one left now and its ancient, possibly the oldest fish in the pond, seeing yours I think its about time I added a few new ones as well.....

I lost all of my fish-over 50 of them- in both my ponds-this past winter due to mink. They totally cleaned me out within a few weeks. I just wrote a blog about a bridge I purchased for my garden. The pond supplier I purchased the bridge from lost all of his within a few weeks from mink and those were expensive koi as well as a variety of others. We both had netting well secured over the ponds and it was no problem for the mink. This is the most successful water predator ( they hunt at night) I have ever seen and they leave no trace.. Bought six comets(going cheap for now) as well as the bridge so far six I bought and six there are. A bad problem has developed here because nobody cares to do trapping anymore, wearing furs is no longer fun.

Oh, Loosestrife, that is such a shame, but one of the disadvantages of living in a rural area. The mink are devastating our endemic wildlife as well.

Stera, what prompted me to net the pond today was seeing a Crow walk across the lawn to the pond. Chased it off, when it came back, - hard luck - that is the end of your free meal!!

Dan, how can Shubunkins be cute, you can't cuddle fish.

Life in the garden is just one long battle - who would have thought that crows would go fishing?
When I was in my teens we had trouble with an owl taking fish - scales were found in the pellets!

Can't you be cute without being cuddly?

Cute and cuddly goes together like.......fish and chips. Don't listen little fish, just keep your heads down!

Actually Sirius I live in a small town but my house and my neighbors partially encircle a watershed area which protects an artesian spring which empties into a nearby creek. As the mink deplete their food supply in the rural areas they are using creeks and streams as highways to move into new forage areas, hence they are coming into town. I checked with our wildlife management an it seems that this is a new occurrence since there has been a population explosion in mink. One thing they told me is that they can climb trees so they are a threat to nesting birds too.

Sorry Loosestrife, thought you were in the Uk, where there is a problem with mink in some places. I did not know mink could climb trees, the crafty so and soes.

Homebird, 1/2 of the problems is the fish come to be fed when they hear footsteps. I saw the crow walking across the grass to the pond edge. It is such a shame to have to net the pond, the Pseudocoris Iris are unable to stand fully upright. Your Blue pond Iris, is on the shelf of the small pond, no fish, no netting, such a lovely blue. Thank you.
