Helping the garden birds

In this cold weather we have right now I place the water bowl on three house bricks with a tealight beneath the water bowl … it stops the water from freezing solid and allows the birds to drink and/or bathe.

The Pigeon seemed transfixed by the warm water and stayed there for ages!

Paul, it does work as you can see! No frost here this morning with rising temperatures for the week ahead.

Yes and I am so pleased about it getting milder , windy but mild is great

however I was having to dig out soil in a big pot , tipped pot over and all soil was frozen in one block so it was done in 5 seconds :D

Good idea Shirley! I have bird baths and often have cats getting into the garden so would be worried about the birds being so close to the ground.

Paul, I have a rose to dig up and pot next week, hopefully the ground will be warmer, probably sludge looking at the rain we are set to have ... :o(

Rose, best not to do it then! It is used by the bigger birds as the Goldfinches, Bluetits and Robins use a tall one near their feeders. Honestly, it's like a Michelin restaurant for the birds!

Shirley, glad you are watering your birds! We have a ritual here in the mornings feeding our regulars. Fresh water is always on offer and feeders topped up. Also suet pellets and mealworms for ground feeders. Second mortgage time at the moment...

That's a good idea, Shirley! I seem to remember having read a similar tip somewhere! 👍🏻

Well done Ange ... thank goodness it is milder today, making it so much easier for our feathered friends.

David, I did post a blog about this a couple of years ago so it was probably me you heard it from!
