Sad sad news

This is the hardest blog that I have ever had to write, and there is no way that I can break the news gently to you.

Our adored younger son, Steve, died two weeks ago – asleep in his bed in Cornwall, from a heart attack. The worst news in the world. It was so sudden that we have been in a state of stunned disbelief – but we have now driven the 300 miles to Falmouth twice to sort things out.
This is beautiful Falmouth where he lived for 10 years.

It has been consoling to meet his wonderful colleagues who all said what a lovely, kind person he was. He helped them all (they said he was the ‘go to man’ in the department) and was always patient, but made them laugh too. They organised a service in their chapel last week, and later I invited them all – plus his close friends – to a peaceful garden with a café where we shared our precious memories. He was marvellous company, and we were lucky to have him in our lives for 46 years. But we shall miss Steve forever.

For therapy, I walked with my husband in Trellisick Gardens, where we saw this amazing Hydrangea petiolaris climbing 60 feet up the bark of this tree.

An enormous Pieris ‘forest flame’.

I know that you will all understand why I am not posting much on here for now: thank you.

Sheila, so sad to hear about your loss. I can not begin to understand the loss that you are feeling. When I experienced a great loss the garden has always given me a place to retreat to, hopefully your love of gardening might help in these difficult times.

You’re so right Amsterdam - my garden is a great solace and comfort. In Trellisick I bought a lovely Uncinia rubra and keep it by a bench where I pretend Steve is sitting beside me. Thank you for your comment.

Sheila and family: Sorry to be so late to send along my sincere sympathy. When our children come to us we think that we shall be the ones who will leave first and it's a terrible blow when they leave us here to mourn their going. My husband and I send our heartfelt condolences. xx

Thank you Lori. We are about to meet our Aussie family with two little granddaughters on Vancouver Island: it will be bittersweet because Steve should have been with us, but hopefully we’ll have fun along with the tears.

Sheila. I just got back from New Orleans for work. I'm at such a loss of words I don't know what to say: Only that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I was greatly saddened to hear of Steve's passing. I'm reminded of the passing of my best friend & Father. My father was truly my best friend and though I'm 1 of 6 of his children, he made me feel especially loved and cherished and he was always on my side. That's what I think about, the blessings he left behind - for me! He's still very present in me.

It’s always sad when someone dies Paul, and I’m so sorry that you have lost your dear father. I think I know how you feel because Steve was such a dear friend to me too, always simply wanting me to be happy while I wanted the same for him. Thank you for your thoughts.

Thanks Sandra, yes it’s heartbreaking. I lost it on the plane coming over to Canada yesterday for a holiday where Steve should have been with us - but luckily no-one could hear me sobbing ... xx

25 Jun, 2019

Aww Sheila I understand that, I can sob looking at Johnny's favourite milk shake in Tesco! When them tears come we can't stop them.
But that's a mother's love xxx
