Can any of you clever people help?

It’s OK – I’m not going to ask you to clear the snow!

In the past, I have shared several of our winter quizzes with you, and sometimes you have solved the occasional mystery clue. This year, the subject is “Sea and ships” and we have managed about 95 out of 100 questions (we have been puzzling for about 4 weeks!).

e.g. 1. card game where you find the man in charge (6), answer: Bridge
2. Paper street for all the ships (5) . . Fleet
3. Apple lover (8) . . coxswain.

We are STUCK on 4. Don Quixote’s target (4)
and 5. Hewer (7).

I’d be so grateful if you can think of anything, so that I don’t stay awake any more at night. Might even find a packet of seeds as a prize! Many thanks Crossword solvers!

And some snowy pics to remind you what winter COULD be like :))

Don tilted at windmills so I think the answer is. Sail

1 Jan, 2013

The nearest I can get to hewer is clipper, as in 'clipper ships'

1 Jan, 2013

Number 5 will be "cutter" I expect. Any more? I LOVE puzzles like this!

1 Jan, 2013

i thought sails too ~ and for hewer, I didnt think of something straight away but cutter sounds right to me, clever people ~ Pam and Gattina

have you got any more puzzles for us to chew over please shiela

lovely pictures!

1 Jan, 2013

I agree with anything you say Gattina.......you're scary. :0))

1 Jan, 2013

No Pam ~ that's just a pussy cat!!!

1 Jan, 2013

Its a Very big pussy cat.......

1 Jan, 2013

Pam - I'm so glad you're there - I felt sure you would have some good ideas! Thanks . . . and 'sail' is obvious now that you've told me.

Thanks Gattina too - we also thought of 'clipper' and 'cutter': obviously clipper has the right number of letters (7), but we've put that for "Does your hair and brought your tea". But the setters do say that there's no guarantee that all the answers are different!

Thanks Sticki. OK, I'll give you one or two more:
6. That is done with a grudge (7)
7. Where a lord disembarks (4)
8. Intrude in flat bottomed carrier (5)
9. An all-comer mood improver in charge (9)

1 Jan, 2013

10. In Noah's ark, ten contain liquids (6)
11. An all-comer mood improver in charge (9)
12. 52 preceeds 13 for general duties (8) (and they are not numbers of other clues!)

Have fun.

oh dear those are harder!! but thank you!

the only other idea i can come up with for hewer is one of those ships that cuts through ice ~ 'iceboat' ???

1 Jan, 2013

Good idea Sticki, but I'm fairly sure they're icebreakers.
I can give you the answers to the 'new' ones if you like! (or at least, the ones we've come up with . . . )

1 Jan, 2013

not yet please sheila! but im sure i will have to ask for them eventually!

i agree about ice breaker but one of the google options was ice boat ~ only one with 7 letters!

Hi Sheila - I haven't been commenting on GoY for some time due to poor health - but just looked in on your quiz questions as you know I enjoy them! Could Pier (Peer) be the answer to number 7? Also, Barge for number 8 .......

1 Jan, 2013

Yes indeedy Shirley: very good. Sorry to hear you've not been too well . . . hope you are on the mend?

1 Jan, 2013

12 - 52 is the number of weeks in a year and 13 is the number of lunar months in a year (alternatively 13 is the number of cards in a suite) - maybe give someone else a hint, I don't know!

1 Jan, 2013

Your second thought is on the right track, Bublbaholic!

1 Jan, 2013

'K. I was reminded of the American folk song (60/70's) "Pack of Cards" where the soldier is defending his court martial for having a pack of cards out in church. Still don't see where the sailing connection comes in.

1 Jan, 2013

No 10.....bear with me on this

ten = roman V

Vessel

2 Jan, 2013

I like pier and barge.....

2 Jan, 2013

Bulba - I wouldn't have 'got' it, but my OH told me the answer is 'deckhand'.

No. 10 Pam . . . we went for an anagram of ark and ten, i.e. tanker, but you could be right - thanks!

2 Jan, 2013

I shall post a blog soon, Sheila, cannot believe it's almost a year since I had the heart attack! Happy new year to and yours ... :o) x

2 Jan, 2013

Pam, I think Roman ten is "X". "V" is five. I'm still no wiser, though! Darn it, Sheila, I thought of "Deckhand" and was ever so proud of myself, then scrolled a bit further down and found you and your OH had beaten me to it!

2 Jan, 2013

Oh Gattina......you are so right!
My excuse is a lingering virus from christmas......

2 Jan, 2013

OMG Gattina . . . you're not just a pretty face then! I'm impressed . . .

Thanks Shirley - may 2013 be a good year for you :))

2 Jan, 2013

P.S. Hope you get better soon Pam :))

Btw, I now have the WHOLE QUIZ as an attachment on email, so if anyone really really wants to see it, just PM me with your email address! x

2 Jan, 2013

No, Sheila, I think the phrase you need is "Not EVEN a pretty face......" But thank you anyway. I used to be an avid crossword fan, when we still got UK newspapers, but these days I do codewords instead - hundreds of them, one after another. I get given books of them as presents. I've got out of the habit of solving cryptic clues, and the old brain needs a little lubrication, but I can still surprise myself (and others) with the odd flash of lateral thinking. It's quite heartening.

3 Jan, 2013

The only cryptic crossword I can do is in the Radio Times, which I only buy about twice a year. But (luckily for me) there is a codeword in our daily paper, tho' I wish there was more than one!

3 Jan, 2013

When we go back to the UK, we buy newspapers, and cut out the puzzles and bring them home, photocopy them, and then each of us has our own supply!

3 Jan, 2013

Sort of what we do when we go on holiday . . . can't be without our puzzles (hope that's not sad!).

3 Jan, 2013

Pretty avatar btw . . . less scary :)

3 Jan, 2013

Yes, I thought so, too - a bit more feminine and good-weatherish!

3 Jan, 2013

i like codeword!!!

i usually take a puzzler magazine on holidays!

just had a thought sheila ~ i wonder if there is a code word on the ipad?

3 Jan, 2013

I don't have an ipad Sticki, but I sometimes do a codeword online (Google the last two words and you'll find it!).

3 Jan, 2013

oh sorry for some reason i thought you had one ~ ok, i will google that ~ thank you!

3 Jan, 2013

I only discovered the other day that subscribing to The Daily Telegraph on-line means we have access to all their puzzles. Not that I need an excuse to waste any more time sitting in front of this darned computer!

3 Jan, 2013

I think the times offers a similar option?

3 Jan, 2013

You're right Sticki, but you do have to pay for it :))

4 Jan, 2013

I like the puzzler crosswords and cross quizzes, I enjoy the general knowledge questions, and the one where they give you three words and you find the fourth to fit.....
Don't like cryptic but do like anagrams......

And no to code word or wordsearches..........

Its good to puzzle it uses the other side of the brain they say, like the creative artistic side...

Thats my excuse anyway...... :0)))

4 Jan, 2013

yes, true sheila, pay for the paper and get the online version free i think

4 Jan, 2013

Sticki - they are after our money . . . you only get the Times online version free if you buy the paper by subscription! Nearly everything on their website "fades away" unless you are a paid-up member: clever stuff :)

4 Jan, 2013

much cleverer than me! no wonder they are rich and I am poor!
yes sorry I forgot to say subscription, thats what my son has.

4 Jan, 2013

We've just signed up for a subscription to the on-line Telegraph - it's much cheaper than actually buying the paper every day would be, and you don't have to re-cycle all that newsprint and woodpulp!

4 Jan, 2013

Good idea Gatt . . . I'm sure I'd do that if I lived abroad. (but I do enjoy their website, for the gardening articles!)

5 Jan, 2013

I do miss the weekend supplements.

5 Jan, 2013

I like your avatar Gattina... :0))

is it a painting or a photo, its very pretty

5 Jan, 2013

Thank you, Pam - it's a photograph.

5 Jan, 2013

Very good xxx

5 Jan, 2013

I love to read the go-back -and forths. I have never done a crossword in my life, although my children have races with them. I am afraid I might become an addict and already have enough of those. But it sounds like so much fun. Good going, all of you. And it is so good for the brain! Posy

22 May, 2013

I don't think you would come to any harm if you became a crossword addict Posy! Yes, I like a good "brain workout" and don't go near the other sort. What other addictions do you suffer from?!

22 May, 2013

Cadbury's Chocolate and Ikea oat biscuits! (sorry, Sheila, I know you weren't actually asking me, I couldn't help myself)

22 May, 2013

ha ha gattina ............lindt chocolate for me! also cakes, good biscuits, and the computer!!!

22 May, 2013

No worries Gatt . . . it's good to see you again (where've ya bin after all this time?!).

Good game, Sticki: OK, large prawns, tarasamalata, Cotes de Rhone and DARK chocolate with nuts! Oh, and gardening, lol :)

22 May, 2013

please add dark chocolate on my list ~ with nuts in, is even better! taking photos and plants too!...i dont mean i take plants!!!

gattina, do you have rescuing cats on your list?

22 May, 2013

At the moment, Sticki, "No" is the answer to the latest question. We have been finding more and more little strangers adding themselves rather cautiously and nervously to our established bunch, and the thought of having to start again, rounding them up (almost impossible) and getting them "done" is not an attractive one. The old crowd are, understandably, not very welcoming, and are set to fight and spray everywhere at the slightest excuse, and when we borrow the capture cage to try and catch the newcomers, go and snaffle the bait, then sit, looking foolish and wailing until we let them out. We obviously shall have to start again, but it's not a happy way to spend our days.
I really do need to add something to my little list, thogh, and that is WARM weather!!!!! We are getting sporadic sunshine, but I've put off putting my winter clothes and shoes and boots back up into the loft for another few weeks yet. It's FREEZING here, and very wet. We have seriously been thinking of bringing the firewood down into the cellar again and firing up the stoves. We spend our t.v. watching hours draped in duvets to keep warm, and I think I may have to get the electric blankets out again.

I didn't expect anyone to notice my absence, Sheila, but the reasons have been absence on holidays, busyness, a very welcome visitor, and a few bouts of ill health. The latter still not resolved, and I hesitate to start expanding on it 'cos I'd just be writing in moaning mode, and there's nothing worse, having to read other people's gripes and feeling sorry for themselves. I'm sure I shall be back once the weather cheers up and I feel in a more positive gardening frame of mind. So, I'm sorry, you haven't got rid of me just yet. :o)

24 May, 2013

Pm coming up Gattina . . .

24 May, 2013

Hi Gattina, glad you are ok \o/ :o)))

24 May, 2013

Nice to hear from you Gattina, sounds as if the poor weather here is further afield too, its so cold and windy too, we all need sunshine.....boosts the immune system it seems......

24 May, 2013

I've just spent the afternoon, huddled round a roaring fire with friends, all of us wearing sweaters, thick socks and boots, cuddling cups of hot tea and watching the athletics from a sunny Manchester. The temperature outside can be no higher than 6°, and the rain is making mud out of the garden. I can't finish planting up my tubs and baskets, and there are a load of plant pots, some of them still with plants in them, bowling across the garden, which will probably end up in the field below. Some of us are coughing, which means the rest of us probably will be too by the end of the week. The Part of the Giro D'Italia that takes place in the Dolomites has been cancelled because of snow, which means we'll probably get the same here in a day or so. At the moment, that doesn't surprise me. I'm currently heating up soup, and planning an early night after a nice hot soak in the bath. Oh, Boy, do we need that sunshine to boost our systems - I'm absolutely sure you are right about that, Pam. Thanks, Annella. It's kind of comforting to be back. Things can only get better.
