Primula, a common, well loved plant that holds a secret. A secret about sex!

Sex makes sure that all the genes get mixed up, creating new shapes, colours and scents. So why are primula so different to other flowers.

They come in to basic types. A pin form and a thrum form.
What I hear you say, what is this woman on about?

So take a flower; look closely what do you see.

This is a pin form. In the middle you can see what looks like a pin sticking up in the middle. This is the female stigma [head of pin] and style [shaft of the pin]

This is a thrum form. The clusters around the top in the middle of the flower are the anthers on very short filaments. These two parts make the stamens or male parts.

So are primulas only male or female flowers I hear you ask? Well no, like many flowers they have both male and female parts in one flower.

Let me dissect them for you.

The pin has along style and the stamens are half way down the flower tube.
The thrum has a short style and high anthers.

[Sorry the label lines dont touch the actual parts but extend them and they are pretty much in the correct place.]

So why? Well it ensures that pollen from one plant is passed to the stigma of another. In other words:- cross pollination

Think about a bee drinking nectar. Pollen from a pin flower gets coated half way down the bee’s tongue. When she visits a thrum flower her tongue brushes past the high anthers picking up pollen but rubs the pollen [half way down her tongue] off onto the stigma half way down. And back and forth the bees go swapping pollen between flowers.

Now the more observant may be thinking well why doesnt the bee pollinate the thrum stigma with its own pollen. Or perhaps thrum pollen falls down onto the thrum stigma.

Another clever bit: young primula flowers will not accept their own pollen as they have a chemical inhibitor. If the flower doesnt get pollinated it will accept its own pollen for only a day or two before the flower dies.

Better to produce seed from your own pollen than not produce any seed at all.

The more I look the more I see.

Hope you enjoyed this.

Thank you so much for that ....just the sort of stuff I want to learn about.....My recent Horticultural course did not cover plant science.......I will digest this tomorrow......

Nice Blog E , I will look closer at these the next time in my garden, just goes to show every day is a learning day :-)

It's all new to me but then I am a late developer. Just as well humans aren't as successful at reproduction. no danger of that though, we'd need a third party to pass on the seed !!

28 Nov, 2009

enjoyed learning about these pretty plants, amazing isnt it, will take a look at mine tomorrow, little things we dont notice when looking :o)

28 Nov, 2009

Fascinating blog seaburn, thank you x

28 Nov, 2009

I never realised (or even thought about) the sex life of plants but I suppose they have to have one. Brilliant and so easy for me to follow.
Thank you very much SBG. You learn something new every day!

thanks for the lovely comments.
When I was 7-ish, I first noticed it in the wild primroses that grew in the old cemetry. My beloved uncle went to the local library/museum and asked the wildlife curator why. The curator leant me a lovely book that explained the plant morphology. And as they say 'that was it'. 40 odd years later I still cant walk past them with out having a look to see what type they are.

28 Nov, 2009

thanks Ian. you wouldnt believe how elaborate plant sex can be. Makes our chocs/perfume/ seem very amaturish.

28 Nov, 2009

I find it all fascinating Seaburn and love your story about when you were little. Some things stay with us forever :-)
My native primroses must be doing it right as they seed all over the place, even in the lawn :-)

28 Nov, 2009

I could write a book about my uncle's influences on me. I still hear his words of encouragement even though he died in 1986. sadly missed by all the family and many others too.

28 Nov, 2009

Chocs? Perfume? ......... No I don't get it? Lol ;~))

Murray used to be good with the chocs and perfume bit....then we moved in together and everything changed!! I don't remember the last time he brought me flowers home. :o(
typical!!!
Thanks for the great blog SBG.....but I have a question....Are all the flowers on one plant the same or are there some of each kind on each plant. If they are all the same, does that mean that the flowers of the same species of primula will be all the same. For example, are all primula vulgaris pin types or do some p. vulgaris have pin and some have thrum?

28 Nov, 2009

murry probably thinks you have enough flowers in your garden Gilli, and thinks shop bourght just cant compeat either lol

28 Nov, 2009

within the species you have pin and thrums. but each plant is either a pin form or a thrum form. so you wont get both flower forms on the same plant. Does that make sense?

I have seen it in cowslips and oxlips too. I will have to check my denticulata come the spring. not had a close look at them. ooh now i am curious. roll on spring.

28 Nov, 2009

but i dont/cant grow freesias and there are lots of others he could send me.
I get useful presents that he then uses too. [latest dust pan and brush! where is it now? in his shed!!!!!!!]

28 Nov, 2009

I didn't follow it when you mentioned it before on a photo I took of a primula - but with your clear expanation, I do now. We learn something new every day! Thanks, Sbg. ;-)))

28 Nov, 2009

Those are his words exactly San.....a fine excuse I say!! I get those types of presents too SBG. The last thing he "bought" me was a new broom....why? Because he had used my old one in the garage and wrecked it!! <sigh>

28 Nov, 2009

creating a vacuum in your life then Mac!
still love my man though ;

Thanks spritz. I notice it every time i see them. I just cant help my self. I will have to do snap dragons but it will have to be next year unless i can borrow some flowers from my neighbour. I lifted all mine and composted them last week.

28 Nov, 2009

That was wonderful. It took me back to my A level Botany days lol. Thanks for a great lesson.

28 Nov, 2009

I was never taught that in Biology. Plants were not really appreciated unless it was the dreaded Biochemistry of photosynthesis. still gives me nightmares.

28 Nov, 2009

lol. - I hated that part of the course too, but morphology and ecology etc I enjoyed.

28 Nov, 2009

I'm reserving judgement at the mo San.....My 50th is next week so we'll see how he redeems himself. LOL.

28 Nov, 2009

ditto and physiology too.

28 Nov, 2009

What is it about Biochemistry that is SOOOO dry?? I loved most parts of biology but biochem was a chore.

28 Nov, 2009

Goodness it's my 50th next June but looking at you two I must have had a really tough paper round !!!!

28 Nov, 2009

You're all youngsters. I'll be 60 in May.
Well I always say it's my body that will be 60.
I am only 8 :o)

28 Nov, 2009

LOL....for a minute there I thought you said WE had had a tough paper round...I was going to come over there!!!
Well, I don't exactly feel like a babe in arms any more Hywel....my back aches, my knees ache, my eyes are going, my hearing is going and my memory is going......LOL...mind you, inside my head I'm 21.

28 Nov, 2009

You're older than me then Gilli lol

Well I have a lot of complaints but I think of them as things wrong with my body, not with me. :o)

28 Nov, 2009

Well, that's true isn't it Hywel. It is just things wrong with the body. Trouble is I don't want to be trapped inside a broken down, rusty, seized up body when I'm 80 and still only 21 in my head. Still, I don't suppose we have much choice...what will be, will be.

28 Nov, 2009

We have loads of choice Gilli , I intend growing old disgracefully! and remaining 21 in my head forever.

28 Nov, 2009

I want to be shot on my 100th birthday! By a jealous husband!!!!!

28 Nov, 2009

Very well written description of a plants 'sexy' bits Sbg. I liked it.

28 Nov, 2009

I hope the neighbours don't talk when they see me crawling around the garden on my hands and knees in the spring taking a survey of my 'pins' and 'thrums', lol

28 Nov, 2009

Lol, Digger! Typical of you! Hee hee!
I'm 50 too, but like Mac will remain young in my head!!
Lovely choice of words, Mr Moonbulb, made me giggle!

28 Nov, 2009

LOL! I got a really backhanded compliment last week. I overheard one of my (18 yr old) classmates on his mobile, telling someone that some of the people in his class were 'really old' (!!!???) Then he said that I must be about 40, but I was pretty cool, & totally mad!

29 Nov, 2009

Hey you aint 50 when you got 18year old classmates

Very interesting blog.

29 Nov, 2009

Lol, Mac! Good one!!

29 Nov, 2009

sorry not been on earlier. family came down from sunderland for a pre xmas get together. so thanks for all the complements.

why is biochem dry, Gilli, well for me its the fact i cant see the atoms/bonds between them. show me xylem and i can see what it is doing, i can stain it/ strip it out and had a good look etc. never could get excited by it [biochem].

going to the flippant bits, I'm 51 in body but i often get a surprise when i see my reflection and think who is that old woman. I still feel 23 in my head and heart. the best time of my life before things started to 'slip off the plate'!!!

29 Nov, 2009

Exactly! That was my favourite time in my life too! I just found my ex-husband on facebook & I changed my avatar on it!!!

Thank you for this info I love this sort of thing..pin head and thrums..will be ringing through my head from now on!..
Good job ...on drawing and explaining! Goodness I do love the sciences and this is a favorite of mine...

As to age..well I was age six before I was age 6 and am now still the six year old on her first day of school who after feeling lost in a big new world, told herself as she wandered keeping her eyes low looking at shoes going past...and trying to remember how to get to the bus.."I only have to do this for 12 years, not the rest of my life." Can you imagine? what on earth?.., where did I get that from?...oh well..I still tell myself that and a few other things as well..
My body has joints and man are they noisy, yelling all the time about anything I do...what is that all about? and when did they get that squeaky, poppy voice?
Facebook? I have gotten no viruses from it ..I love Facebook, I have a farm there on Farmville..lol..it is so much fun..I feel like a 6 year old big time there..lots of fun..and my son and 3 of my grand children, one daughter, my daughter-in-law, my cousins and a bunch of friends are making farms there as well and we all work together sending farm stuff to one another..and we watch each other build their farms it is a riot..but no viruses..I do know how to do a mean system restore when I have to tho....you scared Ian..come on..don't be fraid..I have bubble gum.... <grin>

30 Nov, 2009

Lol! I've got a farm too! I've made contact with old friends & even estranged family through it, so I'm happy with it! No viruses either!

30 Nov, 2009

sadly our 17yr old got horrendous viruses when she accepted some one she didnt know. hubby went beserk. very expensive to fix.

30 Nov, 2009

I got that from just opening an email that was supposed to be from a friend!

30 Nov, 2009
