Hyacinths

I love hyacinths, especially when they have had the time to ‘relax’. When you buy them, their first year looks like they have been on steroids :o). They often do very little the year after but in later years they are pretty and with plenty of flowers to make them enjoyable but not to many that makes them fall over/snap.

On warmer days their perfume is lovely and subtle, I find them too overpowering in the house. My mother wouldn’t have them indoors as a consequence.

just a few photos so you can see what I mean about their ‘relaxed’ flower form.
Delft Blue

Pink Fondant

Gypsy Queen

Pink Pearl

un named lilac one

White Pearl

Peter Stuyvesant a really dark blue but the flash makes it seem paler.

Woodstock again the flash has made it paler.

its a shame you cant smell them

They are beautiful colours. I love when they are in the garden but in the house I am allergic to them.

I also love hyacinths. Used to have walls filled with them : now no longer, alas.

Way back, my father had one greenhouse full of them. People would choose the ones they wanted and it was my lovely task to show them round and chalk their initials on the chosen pots. The pots were then taken to cemeteries for Palm Sunday. (My OH still thinks this a very odd tradition as we would meet up with relations/ friends etc there, check on graves, and have long chats.... with the living! Wonder if they still do this in my old home?

Love the scent of hyacinths in the house. Can you imagine what a greenhouse full of the bloom smelt like?

Agree the relaxed ones are more attractive than the formal new ones. Its god that they still have their perfume!

I agree too. They are much more ‘natural’ looking in the ground.

Lovely pictures, I've always planted my ex house ones outside and was a bit surprised to find some people just chucked them away

The ones in my garden have unfortunately decreased over the years, due to slugs & cats
