Making the Brides dream wedding cake/s. A blog for Sticki.

I did mean to make all the cakes but ended up doing only the smallest one as I had far too much to do before the big day. Including getting my head round using soft (Australian) icing. I had expected it would have Royal Icing which is very well behaved and easy to work with. The 4 bottom cakes are 8" circles before icing. The squares were 14", 12" and 10" and the top tier was a 7" circle. All were rich fruit cake. I had to recruit my OH to help with the building work as rods had to be cut and inserted into the cakes to support the cakes above. The Church porch was made of artists board and covered in icing. I did have to use Royal icing to hide unsightly joins but all in all I was as pleased with the result as everybody else at the wedding. My daughter saw such a cake on the internet and wanted one but when i checked with the York baker it was not possible to have it delivered to our home so mum had to do it.

Ten years on and I have an apprentice

Sieve the flour

It has to look like fine breadcrumbs before adding the yolk of an egg.

Make it into a sausageshape before rolling out

Press the cutter on to the dough

Place the pieces on a baking tray

Brush them with egg white mixed with food colouring and Da dah! 20 mins later and out of the oven comes the finished article.

That is soooooo beautiful!!!!! Well done both of you, such a lot of work gone into that, I`m also wondering how you got it to the reception..Popped back up for another look, trying to work out the height....

What a gorgeous cake - well done. I bet the bride and groom were over the moon with it.

Thank you all. I cr what the total height was. It was over a metre. The church spire is a florists extension vase turned upside down and covered in Icing. I suppose that qualifies it for a space on GOY lol. The hardest work was trying to decide how to build it so that it could be transported over to Fife for the reception. It all comes apart and was popped in to cardboard boxes for the journey. We both had to go along on the morning of the wedding to assemble it. The cake board at the bottom is actually an off cut of left over work top measuring 60cm x 60cm approx. I then covered it in turkey foil and icing then put ribbon around the sides. It is by far the most challenging cake I had made because the only time I had used that Australian icing, which is a bit like plasticine to work with, was in making flowers for another wedding cake. Making the icing is a bit fiddly but the flowers can be almost transparent. Because it is soft it is vulnerable to knocks. The cake sundries shops are a great help in providing everything from cake boards to flowers. The church bell was a christmas tree decoration. The windows are embossed using a bought tool which fortunately was plastic and I was able to cut it to fit the spaces. I made up the posies as baskets of flowers and just used sprays of silk flowers for the "trees" either side of the door. My son in law was delighted with the bride and groom and took it off with him on honeymoon in case it got lost. I painted the grooms trousers to look like kilt socks and added the kilt. We had a power cut immediately after I put this on and we have just got the 'net back running again.

its an amazing creation you clever lady!!

Just lucky to have had the time to be a stay at home mum with time to explore my creative side when they were small. I designed and made the dress too which was no mean feat as she lives 400 miles away. It helps having a wonderfully supportive OH too.

You are one very clever lady S.gran, well done and I bet they were as proud as punch to announce that 'mum and dad' made their cake. x

It was embarrassing to be honest when my son in law read out a list of all I had done including the table decorations. At the end my OH and I got a standing ovation from the guests. It was a dream wedding for us too.

Aw sweet!!

Thanks Bloomer, Sticki and Lulu. I did not dare write another blog which is not about gardening. He was wearing a pinny I made 43 years ago for my older daughter. It has done sterling work over those years. You can't see it but it has a big pocket across the front with a picture of a chef on it. He is very interested in baking and cooking in general. He is mad about dinosaurs so i let him take the cutter home with him. His big sister who is five loves cooking too and she made banana muffins every other day to take with us on our picnics. My internet has been down again and I have just got it working.

I think it's that photo of him making the sausage shape that I love best - so serious and so careful - baked with love I would say!

He gets away with murder he is such an adorable little boy. "I can do it" is his constant cry so you have to show him and let him get on with it. I wish we lived closer to them because I think they miss out on having both sets of grandparents living 400 miles away.

11 Sep, 2011

My oldest was like that - still is! But it stands them in good stead - being persistent will get him a long way!
Do they live down south?

11 Sep, 2011

Near Bristol. Yes all of mine cook. My son was /is a dab hand with the iron after he had to learn how for a cubs badge.

11 Sep, 2011

Both my boys cook and are good at it, but I can't say the same for the ironing!

I'm absolutely amazed Scotsgran...what a fantastic work of art! If I could have made something like that, I would not have let anyone eat it lol. How wonderful to look back..and then forward to the present and your beautiful Grandson:-)

If I was doing it again i think I could improve it a lot but it was for cutting up and eating. It tasted as good as it looks too. I might not have wanted them eating it if i was not able to capture it on camera. My sister in law decided she wanted a heart shaped cake. I gave her a heart shaped tin and instructions on how it should be baked. She came back with a very singed round cake and insisted it could be made in to her hearts desire. I only had from the Saturday evening when she brought it until the following Saturday to turn it in to a masterpiece. I sent OH round the shops to pick up every packet of marzipan he could find. We had small children at the time. Bless him he came back with enough to allow me to make the heart shape around a tiny 6"cake which had to have all the burned bits scraped off. I put a bit of greaseproof paper in to where the best bit of cake was placed so that when it was cut it looked the part. She only wanted one tier so it had to be a big cake. Fortunately it was not a big wedding but there was no cake to send out to people who had sent presents. She was a scream. They say the good die young and she died of cancer soon after her son got married but she was a happy soul and loved her daughters two girls.
