Propagation part 2

Like many members of SRGC I pack seeds for the seed exchange operated from Scotland but serving members worldwide. Donations of seeds come from every continent and are packed (5 to 50 seeds) in glassine envelopes. A seed list is published and members order what they want. Sometimes donations are not large enough to fill those orders and the order pickers will substitute something else. I received a packet of Narsissus Bulbacodium hybrids containing approximately 10 seeds as an alternative to a requested pack of primulas. On 15.4.2015 I sowed them in a pot and waited, and waited and waited. Judge for yourselves if it was worth it. I am thrilled that this year they are showing their first flowers. The petals are miniscule and the trumpet huge but they are only six inches high and I hope they will spread if I plant them in the rockery.

The joys of being a gardener are very satisfying.

It's nice to have something unusual, they're lovely little flowers. I'm glad you had the seeds and were able to grow them.

Thank you Hywel.

Now, I had a pot of bulbocodium...not from seed, from bulbs. They flowered the first year in my garden...so pretty. They have not flowered since. Every year the leaves come up like grass, and the clump gets bigger, but no flowers. After mentioning this to Brian, he advised that they require heat in the summer to flower. So I have now dumped mine because I can’t give them heat in the summer, except in the greenhouse. So I would reckon...keep them in a pot and give them heat in summer, and you will get flowers again. :)

That is expert advice Karen so I will give it a go. Yes Pcw I had quite a lot of Narcissus etc which I was hoping to show this year but I could not have done with OH needing me to be here. Entering shows involves either staging the night before or early on the show day neither very good for me. Having to leave pots until the end of the day is no good either as it would be too long away from home. Next year the plants will all be bigger and better so fingers crossed I can do it then. I am enjoying these for now.

Aren't they lovely - so delicate! Well worth waiting for.

I bought some in a pot and they were lovely but like Karen they haven't flowered since. in fact I don't think they even put up leaves now. I suspect totally dried out or got by the squirrels.

Thank you Steragram. Sbg keep your eyes peeled the squirrels are quite good gardeners, giving little presents to your neighbours. They do not often take the bulbs very far before replanting. I will keep them in a pot with fresh compost in the hope of showing them next year.
