today the tree man came to chop down the trees 2 hours later and they are down, he`s just doing a tree for my neighbour then tidying up ,my god it looks bare now but so much bigger, im wondering if ive done the right thing lol, so many stumps there and will i ever be able to do anything with this area :o(
before i came along my lovely hubby baz use to dump anything behind these trees and so much soil unbeilable really, well thats a none gardener for you isnt it lol
the doves came and saw their trees being chopped down poor things, what has auntie sandra done with our garden i hear them say.
at least my back neighbour has a conifer hedge and ive had my conifer chopped to size which will grow to a peak again hopefully, sawdust everywhere so lots to do and must get something to help kill the stumps,
it may have to be a raised area with all this , cant see us getting it as flat as the main part of the garden, it will take time i know so dont expect pics till next year guys :o)

above pics give you an idea of what lies ahead here at the sanbaz manor

Wow Sandra, what a difference , no going back now!!
There's still plenty of perching space in those conifers for the birds so I'm sure they'll forgive Auntie Sandra.
I'm sure you'll get lots of ideas from others plus you own - how exciting to have some 'new' garden to play with!
Whatever you do, you can always change it if you don't like it and nature will change it anyway as time goes on. Good luck!

My Goodness so much Space there !!! I cant wait 2 see what u decide 2 do with it all San :)

30 Oct, 2009

Shock when you first do this but you will soon get use to it and have fun planning the next stage. If you still want a tree further forward you could plant woodland/shade lovers behind it. A few that I have planted in similar situation after removal of Wilow/poplar are Bluebells, Cowslips, Primulas, Fatsia, Hellebore niger, and Helianthus lemon Queen. I will enjoy seeing what you decide to do so lots of pics please.

thanx lily, jacque and Drc.. ive just been out taking all the creepers from ivy also brambles, ouch lol, and lots of montbretia which has taken over, bin full and only a third clear, so untill tuesday, bin day have to pile up in the corner, going to B&Q in a min to get something for stumps,a little help wouldnt go a miss but everyones busy, how odd :o) lol

30 Oct, 2009

You've made a good start Sanbaz and we don't mind waiting for pics until next year as you are not part of the Ground Force team but a patient gardener. It would make another good raised bed area as you suggested. Good luck with it

30 Oct, 2009

thanx pip.. no im most surtainly not ground force team lol, just cut the grass to get lots of mess up so much easier than raiking, so grass tidy and looking better already ;o)

30 Oct, 2009

I still think it should be a ........... Ooops never mind just thinking out loud! Lol
Seriously what about a rocky area (not a rockery) like a dry bed? I don't know what they are called but an area where you put dry loving plants and ... ALPINES thats it ! ! ! Lol

I was just thinking you could build it up and hide the stumps etc under that?

30 Oct, 2009

lol ian, did i feel a veggie plot coming on there heheh
as for a raised area it looking like thats only option cause so many stumps there, im wanting an arch so maybe to lead to a quiet area to, ive gone mad today and done way to much ian, my tum and back killing me now :o(

30 Oct, 2009

Ohhh San, You need to be careful! I know it's no good saying leave it till you feel better but I wish I lived closer I would come and give you a hand! Take your time and try not to do any more today, please. :~))

30 Oct, 2009

aww thanx ian im resting now, i did feel a bit of a pull in my tum area so stopped, raining here now so that will sort out the last of the sawdust, joe is going to do the digging for me when im ready and baz will do his bit when he gets a day off, so its just me being very impatient lol

30 Oct, 2009

Tut tut, but I know what you mean. Earlier this year, when I couldn't do anything, it was driving me mad but time took care of that and now I wish for a day off! Lol

30 Oct, 2009

lol think i will be the same after this project, going to get stump killer tomorrow, to tired now and rain here anyways,;o)

30 Oct, 2009

Well put your feet up and have a kip! Thats what I got told to do! ;~))

30 Oct, 2009

im going to ian right now, im bushed lol

30 Oct, 2009

gosh can imagine how you felt on first seeing Mariw had hers done last year and was in tears, but its really recovered now and she has so much more room to put in more plants, knowing you it will soon be looking lovely again and some exciting new projects for you! perhaps you could get round Baz to make you a Pond!, Having said all this Ive got ther tree surgeon coming to do some trimming of trees and bushes but I have emphasised that I dont want much off, I will be behind him all the way as I do value my privacy, feel sorry for the poor man!

30 Oct, 2009

So it's just a short back and sides all round then Pp?

30 Oct, 2009

I hope so Ian lol

30 Oct, 2009

thanx carole im already happy with whats done and can only get better now :o) was a shock at first, the rain has been and made it all look fresher to,good luck with your tree surgeon ;o)

30 Oct, 2009

There one minute gone the next yes Lily is right they will nest in the conifer, looks better now, hope you achieve what you want, you will think I should of done this ages ago

30 Oct, 2009

your right morgana it alot better and next year i wont remember what it looked like lol, been watching the birds flying around thinking whats she done now, where`s the damn landing area gone lol

30 Oct, 2009

lol Sandra

30 Oct, 2009

My neighbours had big conifers cut down recently Sandra and the guys who did it had a grinder of some sort and the stumps are now gone. In fact the area where they were is now turfed over. Mind you, I don't know how expensive that would have been!

30 Oct, 2009

think its alot dearer paul, you can hire one but not sure how much, may look into that, will see when iv cleared the way a bit. but it will be alot of work whatever we do, worth it though :o)

30 Oct, 2009

Paul/San, i paid £50 for the stump grinder guy to come out, do the job and dig it over for me !

I guess the cost's all relevant to what you're expecting and needing done and whether you could do it yourself.

I thought it was money well spent.

30 Oct, 2009

All done then Sandra :-)
Dont worry, it will take a while to get accustomed to the new look, it will be fab when its all sorted.

30 Oct, 2009

thanx louise only thing is its got a few branches comming off so i have to find out where and how big the stump is first, so will decide then, lots of dumped ground around it to be removed first, can i just say wasnt me who dumped all the ground round the tree that was a certain man beggining with B, lol not a gardener either.
yes all done dawn and now ive started to clear the montbretia and creeping ivy, also brambles its looking better, im sure its going to be good, and having lots of evergreen along fence/ivy its not a bare look, :o))

30 Oct, 2009

Nice one Sandra!

30 Oct, 2009

joe has offered his services to help with digging away soil to get to the branches that are growing from stump and are at this time covered with ground, so thats going to make such a differance dawn :o)

30 Oct, 2009

If he's really good at it then he could eventually dig the whole stump out by cutting the roots off with the loppers! It would take some time but it is do-able!

30 Oct, 2009

yes your right ian but will see how deep it is and how big first.ive looked up methods of removal, grinding if large stump, splitting with axe if smaller as to ease removing stump, like chopping wood if you understand what i mean, to splinter it into sections

30 Oct, 2009

Yes, I do understand. Wish him good luck from me. ;~)))

30 Oct, 2009

will do ian lol ;o)))

30 Oct, 2009

;~))

30 Oct, 2009

Well done, just think what new plants you will be able to buy, if you can get the stumps out (grinding is the easiest way, although can be expensive, but worth it, believe me), lost count of the trees we have dug out, roots and all, and I wonder why I have a bad back lol

30 Oct, 2009

I agree DD2, been there, done that, got the bad back!! lol
It is worth it in the long run Sandra then all your options are open, you can do anything you want there.

31 Oct, 2009

thanx dotty and lily, im sure your right and will defenatly think about this method, once we have dug away lots of ground and can see what we are up against :o))

31 Oct, 2009

Great plot for you to plant up, but do take it easy and do a bit at a time till you are well enough to do it, and its winter coming so you have till next spring to sort it out.

31 Oct, 2009

thanx carol im having a day off today, maybe a bit more tomorrow, i just need to get the stumps sorted this year before they get fungi on them and also if i have to put weed killer down then it can be left to settle befor springtime :o) i already have a few ideas but not telling lol

31 Oct, 2009

Sandra we took a tree down in that garden next door to me before the new tenants moved in and the stuff we got was called stump and weed killer, its very strong and all Donna's husband did drill a small hole in the top of the stump and poured it in the hole he had drilled its brill stuff i got it from wilko's but if its easier for you B&Q have it in aswell, hope i've helped you out a bit.

1 Nov, 2009

thanx carol i will check that out maybe tomorow, it will need something strong ,once we dig surrounding ground away we will be able to see the original stump, :o)

1 Nov, 2009

Glad to be able to help the box as two sachets in and we only used one and that tree, it was massive and was a conifer, keep thinking if only i could get to that tree at bottom of garden i'd drill a hole in the side of it and pour some in the trunk, that would get rid of it.....

1 Nov, 2009

well hope it works on my tree then,, oh my god dont do that carol you will end up the one in trouble, which is stupid but its classed as criminal damage i think, lets hope the coucil sort something out with it.

1 Nov, 2009

Ye i know i can't do it but just wishful thinking, keeping my fingers crossed they do something.

1 Nov, 2009

:o)) fingers crossed

1 Nov, 2009

Sandra :o)

1 Nov, 2009

whats SBK labdancer, is that how it is on container?

1 Nov, 2009

Good riddance isn't it sandra :o)

1 Nov, 2009

im so happy its gone hywel, lots of space for all things new :o)))

1 Nov, 2009

Yes it's called that Sandra. SBK stump killer

2 Nov, 2009

thanx lily have looked it up, so many differant ones its hard to choose, i know it should be put on within 48 hours but i have to clear away ground first as low as possible and chop away more branches so we can see which part is the stump, but once thats done it will be put on, should be ok as of fresh cuts,
