Hi guys thought i would tell you about our day out to Dunham massey which is in altrincham trafford.
when we got up it was raining pretty hard here in blackpool so i looked up the weather for manchester and chester and no signs of rain there so we got ourselves ready and off we set up the motorway.
as we got closer the sun started to appear, wonderful. once there and paid our £5 carpark, where do they get their prices, oh well got to the entrance and another £10 each, not cheap going to see these places is it.
first we went around the gardens just incase it did start to rain, but what a lovely walk with the sun shining on and off but not cold, so much to see with bare trees showing their new buds and waiting for their turn to burst into life and colour, there were rodadendrons. camilias, magnolias, holly, acers, so many, wish i could go every couple of weeks to watch it come to life.
hellebores were hanging their heads, daffs shining and glowing, pachysandra looking lovely, so many and cant remember alot of names, took plenty of pics which you will see, the trees were a lovely site even in winter and the lake was massive with ducks enjoying the sunshine, and really big carp swimming about happerly.
the house was lovely to look round with lots of history, even some scandal. apparently one of the owners years back married a bare back horse rider out of the circus, what scandal that must have caused lol
their was a lady there in the kitchens dressed as years gone by baking scones and cakes in the old kitchens, it smelt wonderful, gave you an idea how things were, lots of interesting rooms and painting to.
we didnt get to walk around to the deer park to see the deer as baz`s back was playing up and mine to after 3 hours walking around the grounds and house, didnt eat there as £10 for a hotpot was insane, so we stopped off at a pub on the way home, 2 for £10, thats more like it hahah

saw these old trees, wonderfull, years to look like this, reminded me of sculptures

so many pics i cant possibly post them all, but this gives you some idea of what it like, apparently they have the biggest winter collection in the uk and growing

well i will leave it at that or you will all fall asleep its getting a bit long haaha, had a great day out and i felt better for it, hope to get back there in summer to see the deer park, thanxs for joining me guys

It looks a stunning place San and your photos show it off so well ,I will remember the name for when we are up that way another time ,I won't forget it because the last village we lived in was Little Dunham , the story goes that God made the earth it was finished except for a handful , he threw it down and said " there you are that's Dunham " LOL......

Thanks for the lovely pictures - everything is coming into life now isn't it ?

The problem with visiting historic houses and gardens is often the cost - although nice to visit it can become an expensive visit - definately has to be a treat day out.

Always a pleasure to join you San x

Great photos San, so glad you had a nice day, I am still in shock at paying £5 to park the car and then £10 admission fee, thats outrageous,

22 Mar, 2011

Lovely pics sandra.. looks a lovely place to visit..... glad you had a nice day out...

22 Mar, 2011

Thanks for taking us around the beautiful gardens Sandra it was really like being there. In the summer there would probably be a lot of different flowers growing there :-)

22 Mar, 2011

thanx yorkshire, the standard price is £9.60 each i think but they ask if you want to pay £10 and the rest goes to the funding, not being tight but i think they have a cheek asking for extra at them prices and also paying for carpark is to much, when you think about how many people pass through them gates each day, they make a fortune, couldnt do it all the time but did enjoy it :o))
cheers holly it was a nice place and alot go there who live close just to walk in the deer park with their dogs and family, nice to have that so close, cristina lives only 10 mins walk from there but didnt have chance to arrange a meeting this time but will in future :o)

Lovely blog Sandra, isn't that tree trunk marvellous. I'd love to have a bed of hellebores like that too if I had a big garden. I don't blame you passing up the hotpot, I went to a garden centre the other day and thought I would buy a small slice of apple pie and a cuppa. Cuppa £1.50 ...pie slice £2.40....changed my mind, could buy a plant for that lol:-)
