Irises not blooming

sherman, connecticut, United States Us

I have planted irises in the garden in the back of my house, which gets about 3-4 hours of sun in the morning. I planted these irises last year in the middle of the summer. I purchased them already blooming. This year, I have lots of tall green foliage but no blooms. Should I move them to a sunnier spot and if so, when? Its now June 2. Do I have to wait for the fall to move them successfully?

Hi Dew is there any evidence of buds in your irises? Sometimes plants do take a year off flowering for no apparent reason. I personally would not move before the autumn if at all.

Hi Moon grower. Thanks for answering so quickly. No, there is no evidence of buds on the irises in question. This is my first real gardening try. I've been in my present home for 2 years and i guess i get a bit impatient. I will leave the irises in question where they are for this year and baby them over the fall and winter. Luckily, I have several friends who are very generous in sharing their plants with me in return for Bleeding Heart cuttings (of which I have an abundance) and Sedum cuttings (also an abundance)
Thanks again for the speedy answer.

I can reassure you from my own experience. When extending our bungalow we had to remove a very large clump of Irises and the builder found a spot in the garden and dug a massive hole with his digger, then dug out the clump complete with a large clump of topsoil and dumped it in the hole.
The following year we were disappointed to see no flowers and assumed that the shock of the move was just too much. However, this year the whole group has produced masses of flowers and we are delighted!

Hi Bernard,
Thank you for the optimistic words. I go out on my deck and look longingly at my budless irises. I even talk to them (doesnt everyone?) My husband thinks i'm nuts.
I've been reading more about irises and will keep patient and leave them where they are and hope what happened to yours happen to mine. Thanks.
