Can I plant a Magnolia Stellata in a pot

I live in Menrca and want to put this plant in a pot against a north facing wall, is this a good idea.it is in morning sun but shadded from full sun

They are not really ideal for pots because they like a cool root run and pots tend to get warm and dry out, while the top of the tree likes to be in the sun. Having said that, I do keep one in a pot myself as I'm hoping to move house and take it with me. It does not really thrive I'm afraid. Does it have to be a magolia? There are other attractive plants that can be grown in containers - Acer palmatum (Japanese maple) does particularly well in a container.
