With my brain not completely in gear, I bought 4 Cyclamen plants from a market stall a few days ago. I was about to plant when the penny dropped and I remember years ago these were always indoors on a windowsill.

They look extremely healthy and I have left them outside, not planted, but covered overnight with plastic until I know for sure it is safe to plant. I had intended them for pots close to the front door under a small porch.

They were on open display on the market but looking very pristine I wonder if they have ever seen outdoor life.

I remember many years ago putting a dead Cyclamen in the ground after flowering indoors.

that depends which Cyclamen it is as there is a hardy one, is there a label on it? if so then check to see if it says cyclamen hederifolium it's a hardy one..

It is highly unlikely that the cyclamen you bought from a market are hardy. They will need to be in a cool environment over winter and can go outside next summer. Hardy ones in flower at this time of the year are C hederifolium and C mirable but in general what you see in the market will not be hardy.

If the cyclamen have large, very colourful flowers then they are likely to be house plants. If the flowers are small and delicately coloured they might well be hardy. A picture would help to identify them.

I put small colourful cyclamen from a market in the garden this time last year. They're not C. hederifolium (I have those as well) Most have survived and are flowering now. I'd give it a try Dreeny.

The ones you've bought may well be bedding cyclamen - market stalls do sell these at this time of year. They're for outside display, but don't survive the winter. Usually are smaller plants with smaller flowers than the indoor varieties, so if they are smaller leaved with smaller flowers, plant them outside - and wait and see if they come back next year, in case they happen to be hardy ones, though I feel that's very unlikely.

Thank-you everyone for the response re: Cyclamen. They are small plants with small flowers. However, in view of the general feeling they are house plants, at the moment, will keep inside and try planting out in the summer.

Now I shall have to buy 4 plant holders.

Again, many thanks.

If they're outdoor bedders, they will not do well in the house, Dreeny.

I have some in my outside containers, Dreeny. They'll last until very cold weather arrives. They normally survive light frosts OK. I just treat them as 'temporary' autumn plants and replace them with primroses/polyanthus etc when they go over.

How do I say thanks?
