A hedgehog seems to have taken up residence in our garden. We've not seen him yet but we've seen 'evidence' of him so to speak. Will he be a welcome visitor to the garden or will he cause us any problems?

As hedgehogs eat slugs, definitely a welcome visitor, encourage it , but don,t put milk out for it, leave some debris lying about for it to shelter in, and to hibernate in winter. derekm

hi there i think you have just found a friend so look after it.they dont do any harm just the opposit.they will eat slugs /snails etc you could feed it aswell with cat meat etc also leave water or milk out for it at night so it will keep coming back.these poor little creatures are slowly dissapearing..good luck.

Encourage them, like derekm says they will eat all your snails and slugs, never give them milk, water is fine and if you want to feed them especially if they are young then they have to increase there body weight before hibernation, so cat food is ideal for them, but watch cats dont get there first, if you have been useing slug pellets and the hedgehog eats these then it can be fatal for the hedgehog, trust me seeing a poisoned hedgehog is very upsetting.

Also have you got a pond, if so then place a plank of wood in so they can scramble out.

Yes, ALWAYS make the sides of a pond GENTLY sloping so they (any wildlife) can easily get out - or a plank, as Julien says.

You are so lucky to have a hedgehog! I used to have them, but not any more, yet my garden is a suitable habitat. I read recently that they could be extinct in 15 years, due to loss of habitat and roadkill. ( I saw a lovely fat hedgehog dead in the road yesterday--the first mature one I've seen this year and it is dead!)
Apparently they like a fairly wide area to roam in to search for food and the fact that we all fence our gardens so tightly prevents this. There was a suggestion that we get together with neighbours to make hedgehog holes in the fences--not sure this would go down well with everyone!
Maybe if you put out the catfood, the hedgehog will not feel the need to roam!
