Physocarpus opulifolius - been researching varieties and note they are mostly listed as suckering. Anyone know how vigorously they do this and how far away the suckers come up?

Only experience I've had of these so far has been a 'Diablo' - I've been maintaining the garden for 6 years, never seen a sucker off it yet.

Very encouraging Bamboo - thank you! Have been offered a tree or shrub for my birthday and this one is tempting. Though I fancy one of the lighter red ones.

I'd guess if you kept it small and pruned rigorously, that might encourage suckers, not sure.

There is a picture of my 'lady in red' on my picture page Steragram. I only planted this in April and it has come on great. The foliage colour is gorgeous.

Good news about the suckers. I wasn't thinking of pruning it as I'd like a big one. Love yours, Scottish, getting all excited now! Julien, I couldn't find your photo. A whole hedge of it sounds wonderful - do the birds eat the berries? Looking on the RHS plant finder there's a nursery only about an hour away that stocks three varieties so there will be lots of dithering! (if they are all in stock - better ring first)

As Bamboo, i've never seen a sucker on my 'Diablo' either.

I just really wish it was evergreen, how fabulous would that be...

Ah, just perfect !

But if it was you wouldn't get the leaves turning scarlet in the Autumn (which I believe they do?) And you might start taking it for granted instead of looking forward to the Spring...

Scottish, that is genius, putting orange in front - I wouldn't have expected it to "go" and it looks fantastic!

I thought so too! My borders aren't wide enough yet, but I am looking forward to widening them next year and having fun under planting my shrubs :)
