I have planted small onions and the green tops are really healthy looking. Can I cut some of the green 'scallions' and use them for soup or salad or will that hamper the development of the onions under the ground?

If I use some of the scallions at the sides and leave the main centre shoots, would that destroy the growth of the onion

Taking off any of the leaves is going to affect the growth of the onion.

If you cut the tops off the onion will not continue to grow. It is a bit late now but sow spring onion seed if you want scallions.
