are the ashes from smokeless coal fires beneficial to the soil?

Coal ash contains sulphur compounds so personally I wouldn't use it in the garden

Welcome to GOY. I put the ashes from my wood fire around the garden, but not sure about coal ash. Scientifically I assume it should be OK, after all, coal is prehistoric wood, but I'm sure someone on this site will have the right answer for you.
