Can I take slips of esscalola and if so how and when do I do it

Do you mean Escallonia, Derek? I reckon now and in the next few weeks will be OK. Pull some non-flowering shoots off the bush, trim off the lower leaves and put the shoots round the edge of a pot of compost. Keep moist but not too wet and they should root easily.
