Hi Mazz,
Study the area you live in, is it wet, dry, are there frost pockets etc.
Don't start everything at once. Broadbeans are hardy, but are food for mice, shallots we planted on the shortest day and harvested on the longest day.
Growing and planting direct gives the best results. The greenhouse is the place for tomatoes and cucumbers.

thanks for that doctorbob, i'll go and check the soil quality first then maybe have a go at broad beans, when would be the best time of year to plant beetroots, sprouts and potatoes?

Hi again Mazz,
You need to prepare your ground now by digging in well rotted manure or compost. Leave the surface rough, let the frost break it down.
Chit your potatoes if you like, in February, in the greenhouse in seed trays on wet newspaper, eyes uppermost.
Plant out 1st. earlies in the middle of March, lates in April.
Rake down your seed bed from the middle of March, tread it and rake again to a fine tilth. Take out drills. Remember when sowing seeds, cover 4 times the size of the seed with soil. Beetroot, carrots, lettuce, onions radishes and sprouts etc. are best sown at that time.
This applies if you live below a line of Bristol to the Wash, if you are above this it will be two or three weeks later.
If you need any more help, please ask.
