I recently bought a Bouganvilla Plant - is there any chance it might grow or more importantly bloom in Ireland. How should I care for it.

I recently (whilst on holidays in Gran Canaria) bought a Bouganvilla plant. Will it grow in Ireland and if so, how do I care for It?

It's really a conservatory plant in the UK climate. It's not hardy, I'm afraid.

Bouganvillia need lots of sunshine and and heat and very little water really. It does , however need to be protected from frost so needs winter protection in conservatory or greenhouse or a shed, so really its best as a pot plant so that you can move it.

I brought one very sick looking plant last year and kept it overwinter in a just frost free greenhouse it has been outside all summer not looking too great although some sign of new growth. It was returned to the greenhouse about a month ago and is now a mass of flower.I did read that as well as not needing much in the way of water they should not be given fertilizer.Hope this gives you some encouragement.

If you can keep your plant above 5C it remain in flower. Do not leave it outside unless you can guarantee this temperature. They will survive a few hours around zero but not much more. Go very easy on the water, my Boogie pots are just off 'arid' right now.

The most difficult time is spring when the sun is out but the nights are still cool. At such times it is all too easy to increase your watering to fatal levels. If you are in doubt, don't water, but rather watch your plant and monitor its weight very carefully.
