there is a dwarf form of Lilac available which will do fine in a pot though - Syringa persica or Syringa microphilla - the flower form is different from S. vulgaris though.

There are also a number of dwarf varieties of S. vulgaris, but they are still big enough to need a fair sized tub.

I would say it grows to big to be in a pot
