my canary island palms seemed ok after the winter but now seem to be dying,i used a specialist feed i bought about a year ago 6 weeks ago.

Yes, if weather conditions are just right, the mature leaves will be unaffected, while the growing bud is frozen. Without the bud, the palm eventually just dies.
