Giant Golden Persian Ivy (Hedera colchica aurea). Being pot grown will stop it being a nuisance, but give it a fairly large pot so it can start off well. watch out for watering, sometimes pots dry out against a wall faster than in the open

Will the ivy damage the wall though? my husband panics if anything grows near a wall LOL!!!
Thanks for the ideas folks!

How about an evergreen Clematis? The C.cirrhosa group flower in the winter - that would be a bonus - and you could plant another summer-flowering one in the same pot to extend the flowering season. You would need wires or a trellis to support them, and would need to feed them regularly as they are greedy plants. Yes, Ivy can damage walls. My husband killed one that we had against a wall at our last house. It was lifting the coping stones on top of the wall and growing into the mortar.

Don't plant a Clematis armandii, Sewingkilla, it would not be happy in a pot as it is very vigorous once it gets going! There is one down the lane which has grown up about 30' into a tree and has strands dangling over the brook. Very pretty in early spring, though! There are several in the cirrhosa group - 'Wisley Cream' - an all-cream flower, 'balearica' and 'Freckles' - cream with dark red blotches, and my favourite 'Lansdowne Gem' which is burgundy inside cream flowers. I think there's a newer one which is not very hardy too so be careful.

I think the new C.cirrhosa is called 'Jingle Bells' - that's the not-so-hardy one to avoid.
