always do mine on xmas day/boxing day. Mid winter but before the sap starts to rise/ buds swell and break.

i would normaly say now but its still very cold and frosty at night hence me leaving it just another couple of weeks thow early in this case is definatly better than late .

The vintners in France and Germany are out there in the coldest weather of late December early January pruning the vines to ensure that the work is all done prior to the sap starting to rise Nosey. They actually have a portable brazier that they push around the vineyard and burn the prunings on to help keep them warm. Frost can't affect the vine when it is dormant.

oops fare enough result then for steveg then lol . i didnt say frost could damage the vine in winter but i didnt realise how tough they were is all . i just like to do it just before things start growing realy . its a rule thats always worked for me and a lot of plants are very tolerent . i know willows are very tollerent .i guess everyones got there own little ways x .

well i said looking back just before things start growing moon to lol it hasnt yet but i think its soon thow somehow . i think its going to be an early hot one myself but perhaps thats just wishfull thinking lol .

Yes NP both right :-) The sap in grape vines starts to rise very early in the year, before a lot of other shrubs and trees do. I happen to know all this as I worked in the wine trade for a while and visited the vineyards in France and Germany. We were in France in, if I remember correctly January, it was bitterly cold with heavy snow, and there the workers were out in the vineyard pruning. Brrrrr
