Can anyone tell me why last year my tree fern had 12 ferns and this year I only had one was it the bad winter we had

Agree with Dido - just be grateful yours survived, it hopefully should do better next year - provided we don't have another bad winter.

Yes, afraid so, a lot of GoY members lost them completely due to the very cold winter including me, not a cheap plant to lose either eh!
