Hello everyone,
I've a question re. My clematis Montana. This will be its third year since I purchased it as a very small potted climber.
I've never pruned it, just left it to its own devices really. Am I doing the right thing?
Many thanks and take care x

is it still in its pot? Mine is in the ground and is a thug growing several metres a year.

if you are happy with its size then leave it be.
if it out grows its space prune it hard after it has flowered and then the new growth in the rest of the year will produce the flowers next year.

You do need space, such as an old dead tree or a long fence, but you can cut it back to size. They are so beautiful in bloom.

Thanks Eileen, apologies, I thought I’d replied to your message! ☺️
It’s planted at the base of the rockery section of the bund in the soil. It’s clambering up the fence now. Thank you Pennyfarthing also for your advice. I could actually encourage it along the fence, as it goes upwards I can then steer it along the length of the rockery/bund low fence - it’s pretty long.
Thanks to you both and again, sorry for late reply Eileen.
