Conifer - Leylandi

United Kingdom Gb

I am about to make a few changes in my garden and i am currently thinking about removing 2 huge conifers which io like, because I have been advised they suck out the goodness in the soil, they have recently started to go brown at the bottom, can anyone tell me if this is true please and would the garden be better off without them?

leylandi are notorious for being brutes, they grow too big and do take all nutrients from your soil, your garden will be better off without them, if you like trees though, try planting a nice fruit tree when you have changed your garden.

thank you for that, i was thinking also of placing a raised bed there or having a rockery area

Rockery or raised bed would be lovely but be careful not to be too close to the fence to rot it. :-)

Okay, sounds good to me, i'll post it once its all done, i did make a little pond in front which my friend refers to as a washing up bowl, so i will be remaking that so its bigger, so i've got a bit of work to do yet and this site is brilliant for ideas

Will look forward to looking at your new garden

The pond was easy, it was the cement mixture bit i didn't like doing cos it was messy, still that was easy too, i just didn't did deep enough, i'll make sure it's deep enough this time cos i'll put big fishes in it, and plant lots of plants around it, i'll try and encorporate a mini waterfall depending upon how many rocks i get, but yes i'm looking forward to the outcome, you should try it, its such an achievement.

Hi surinder, we moved 4 huge Leyllandii last year, Thug of a tree in small gardens, But to make it easy for us, we cut them down to ground Level,Itsa bigger job to get the roots out too..We built decking and put a brick border round the stumps and filled with gravel, theres pics in my homepage.I hope this helps Surinder, Dee..

Thank you that does really help, i'll check out your pics, sounds like i may need to build a brick bedding area once the trees are out, appreciate that

It doesen't have to be brick surinder, you could use Timber, looking at your pic, if you cut the tree down you could put timber straight across from your shed then fill with peagravel,..Dee..

Good luck with the tree removals, Surinder! It does sound like hard work... I hope you've got help.

if it wasnt so close to your fence I would suggest building a lovely big bonfire over the stump, but maybe thats not such a good idea

18 Aug, 2008

Thanks Dee, that sounds like a good idea, did S..Henry volunteer to help me just then, no i've got it sorted, you didn't think i'll be doing all that lifting do you, Oh no, i've got to preserve my energy for all the digging thats to come.

18 Aug, 2008

No i can't risk a bonfire i'll burn down my neighbours shed, the stumps will get the chop.

you could think about getting in a firm to cut down and bore out the stumps , this will leave you with a clear piece of ground to play with...... good luck in your endeavors

Good thinking Steve i'll make some enquiries

I would prune the bottom so i could get a bow saw in. Fell it, then dig around it so you can cut it below ground level. Cover it over and you wont see it again. Regarding your rockery, will enough sun reach that corner ?. Iam speaking from experience. I had 5 to take down when i moved to the house and they were about 12 to 15 feet tall. Hope this is of help.

Good thinking it is a fairly shady spot, i made a pond in front of it because of the shady area, my alternative is to plant a tree to replace it but i would like it to be visible but not overpower the area.

I would'nt think of planting another tree there Surinder. Well not too near the fence. What about a nice shrub ?.

19 Aug, 2008

Go for the pond, you will get more enjoyment lol.

Yes that fence needs repainting so i would want to leave some space around it anyway, the pond i'm looking forward to changing.

I'm not sure but i think that cement/concrete if not properly sealed is harmful to fish. Maybe another member can tell you more.

i think they are, luckily i have expert help to hand whose own pond looks like a miniature lake full of beautiful fishes so i will be guided in my endeavour, I do appreciate the advice, everyone's been really helpful, don't worry if i'm not sure about anything i will be asking more questions ; )
