I have just potted a patio Gardenia in a container. I have moved it to semi shade because the leaves were getting scorched and it only had one flower which also went brown.Should I have used ericaceous compost and how often should i water and fertilize? Please could I have some advice from an expert as I don't want to lose such a pretty plant

First of all, I'm not an expert but I believe you are talking about Gardenia 'Kleim's Hardy'. From what I've seen of this variety, they look wonderful when first purchased from the garden centre but fail to measure up to our expectations.
As regards watering just poke your finger into the compost and make sure it is only moist. Perhaps a little tomato fertiliser once every two weeks. To sum up, I don't think that you have done anything wrong and with the present weather a semi shaded spot will be just fine.
