I transplanted a cotoneaster from our woods to a somewhat more open area. We watered it very well then, but possibly not soon emough again. Some leaves turned reddish brown and dried up, but many were still green. Now those mostly have turned brown and dry. But the soil is still wet. Might it not survive?

I wouldn't give up on it yet. Depending on how much root damage was done at the time it may just be getting rid of its leaves to conserve water. did you prune it before putting it in the ground?
Keep an eye on it and see if it comes into regrowth in the spring. the top twigs may be dead [scratch a small bit of bark back if its green its alive if its brown that bit is dead so cut it off] but it may come away from the root stem junction.
